Subject:   RV-4 Canopy Support & Hold-Open Bracket
Description:

The canopy support is designed to hold the RV-4 canopy in the open position. It uses 1/8" thick aluminum angle, 3/16" bolts and nuts, a small spacer, and a block of UHMW plastic. The hold-open bracket is constructed of .063 sheet steel and uses a pin pop-riveted to the canopy locking rod to provide a partially open position and also a positive lock in the center of the canopy when in the closed position.

Canopy_001.jpg Photo 001: Two 1/8" thick alum angles comprise the canopy support. The upper end is attached to the canopy frame, the lower end to the A-frame.
Canopy_003.jpg Photo 003: The lower angle is attached through the A-Frame with a AN3 bolt, spacer, and lock nut. The two angles are bolted together with an AN3 bolt, nut, and washer.
Canopy_004.jpg Photo 004: The upper angle is bolted to the canopy frame through a block of UHMW plastic. Note the reinforcement of .063 aluminum rivets to the canopy frame.
Canopy_005.jpg Photo 005: Another shot of the attachment to the canopy frame.
Canopy_006.jpg Photo 006: The canopy support folds under as the canopy closes and is hid behind the canopy frame. Some trimming is required of the frame in certain places. One needs to experiment with the geometry to have the mechanism clearing the various canopy parts.
Canopy_007.jpg Photo 007: Another shot of the lower angle as it swings closed.
Canopy_009.jpg Photo 009: The hold-open bracket. Made of .063 sheet steel. Bent and bolted to the canopy rail.
Canopy_010.jpg Photo 010: This pin arrangement requires some welding of a 1/4" diam rod to a small piece of steel rod with an ID = OD of the canopy locking rod.
Canopy_011.jpg Photo 011: The 1/4 pin will rest in the slot of the bracket in the partial hold-open position and the little locking gate will fall down and hold it there. When the canopy is totally closed, the 1/4 pins locks through the 1/4" hole in the bracket.
