Subject:   Roll Bar Shims
Description:

Here is a tip that I haven't seen written up anywhere so thought I would pass it on. Vans instructions for the windshield roll bar shims say to use "neatly cut pieces of aluminum or a stack of AN960-6 washers". Rather than cutting aluminum or using difficult to handle stacked washers I have made my shims from the scrap Plexiglass cuttings. The way the canopy stretches during formation causes the scrap pieces to vary in thickness by over 1/16th of an inch and allows you to make custom thickness spacers. If you need thinner spacers they can be sanded down on a belt sander before cutting them. Using your calipers find different thickness scrap pieces and mark out a few 1/2 X 1/2 inch squares in a row for spacers, drill 9/64 holes for the #6 screws before cutting out the squares on band-saw.

Attached is a picture of the windshield temporarily in place with a spacer between the plexi and roll bar and another spacer (left) taped on top of the plexi so it will not get lost (wavey vertical line is edge of protective vinyl).
