Subject: RV-8 Cooling Cowl Flap Description: I constructed the cowl flap in response to reports of cooling problems with the IO-360 engine in the RV-8. Looking more closely at the archives the problems seem to have been mostly oil temperature. This flap will, if it does anything, reduce CHT rather that oil temp. When the plane flies we will know for sure.
The bottom bulge was cut out of the cowl and the edges sealed with resin. It pivots on a piano hinge. The hinge was clamped into a puddle of epoxy and filler using an aluminum angle to keep it straight while the epoxy hardened. Metal doublers are used on outside of the hinge rivits. The metal side pieces are positive stops for the open position. The control is a simple Belden cable. It pulls to open the flap.
I built this when I had more time to spend than money. It cost very little to build so if it does nothing to help the cooling situation I won't cry much. If the plane ever flies I will report how well it works.
