Subject: 2D CFD airfoil pressure distributions Description: The Mh78 by Martin Hepperle (these plots are from his program Javafoil free from his great web site http://www.mh-aerotools.de/airfoils/index.htm) is for a high performance flying wing hang glider. Lift to drag (performance) was important but low pitching moment was required and exceptional stall characteristics and handling qualities were the main design goals. The plane has been flying in Germany for some time and has had fairly good reviews.
File: mh78aoa12.bmp mh78aoa12.bmp Airfoil is an approximation of the Kolb airfoil, (modified NACA 4412). The 4412 is an high lift airfoil that does not have a great lift to drag ratio and has a very high pitching moment. It doesn’t need low drag as Homer doesn’t care if his planes can go fast. (for ultralights you want them to hit a wall at 63 mph. ) nacakolb4412.jpg Nice low moment airfoil. Not really what I would use for a Kolb but it is very different from the Kolb so you guys can see a difference ( the changes that would be seen in similar airfoils are very small.)
