I've performed a search regarding engine selection specific to VW applications and the AeroVee. Did anyone follow through with an AeroVee installation and if so, are you satisfied with performance? I have a new grey head 582 complete FF setup for my model IV, but am continuing to research other options. Appreciate any feedback. I've also been evaluating the Jabiru 2200.

I have a KF IV with a Jabiru 2200, and I am pleased with it's performance. I would recommend using the Skyfox cowl instead of the round cowl. Cooling is a major issue, but if you have sufficient air flow over the cylinders, it doesn't seem to be a problem. Also you might need to rejet the Bing carb to control the EGTs.

I'll second what Ron said, and add that the addition of the Rotec
TBI-40 mechanical fuel injection system will enable the pilot to
control the EGT's rather well. I've been test flying mine over the
last several days, and I've seen EGT's as close together as (today's
flight) 41 degrees F., and CHT's as close together as 7 degrees F.
It's nice to be able to adjust the mixture with this device, and also
to see the fuel flow read down as low as 2.9 gph at about 80 mph
groundspeed into a 12 mph wind at 2700 rpm.
I've been playing with "lean of peak" with this device, which is one
reason that I bought it. It amazed me that you can see the EGT's go
down after reaching peak temperature....I was a sceptic as first, but
if the engine lives, I'll be a believer. Even without the ability to
go lean of peak, just being able to adjust the mixture on the fly is
worth the added workload on this pilot during takeoff and landing.

Lane, Why not use the 582? What reduction box is with it?

Hi Pat, It came with the C box and a GSC ground adjustable three blade prop. Are you using the 582 grey head? If so, are you satisfied with it and what kind of performance are you experiencing? Appreciate your feedback.

My oil cooler is located right in front of cooling fins on the Jabiru 2200 oil pan or case. There is about 0.5 inch clearance between the two. I have a bump-out over the cooler on the cowling with an opening at the bottom of the bump-out. This is so the air coming in the opening on the bottom cowl can flow over the oil cooler/engine case and then exit without pressurizing the bottom of the engine compartment.

When I got my cowling, John McBean was not in business. If he has the smooth cowl for the Kitfox IV, I would certainly look at that. My dealings with John have been excellent.

Lane I am still about 2 weeks away from having mine airborne. I am rebuilding a mod 3 that was set up for a 912. I was going to install a 912 but found a 100 hr 582 grey head C box FWF for about 1/3 of what a good used 912 would cost. The 582 is so much lighter that it should out climb the 912. I am an old 2 stroke dirt bike racer so I am comfortable with, understand, and like 2 stroke engines. The older lighter KF seem to me to be a bush plane that I wouldn't relish taking  long trips in no matter what engine it had. If you want to know if the 582's are acceptable talk with Dave in Canada, Noel in Newfoundland and Lenoard in Alaska. They are on this web and between the 3 of them have more 582 experience than the rest of the world put together.

I'm also a motocrosser from the two-stroke days, but have recently made the conversion to a CRF450R like nearly everyone else. I have the advantage of being light--140 wet so perhaps the 582 will work just fine. I also like the idea that I can do my own rebuild having done countless bikes and sleds over the years. Have you tried Evans coolant in your 582. I used it in my 912 powered Pulsar XP and it work well. Thanks again for your feedback and the contacts.
