Good Evening Again Folks,

A few minutes ago I sent a message recommending that everyone go to the APS
website to easily access John Deakin's engine management articles that were
originally on AvWeb. I just checked to see if my advice was good and find
that they have realigned the website. John's articles are no longer on the home
page. You need to click on the TECH button then look for the blurb on the
lower left side of the page that has all of the pertinent Deakin articles.

ROP/LOP is the equivalent to High Wing/Low Wing or Taildragger/Nosewheel when it comes to never ending debate.

The difference heree is that Deakin and Braley have brought scientific data and theory to the table to support LOP.

This, in my opinion, is especially important in the 520K engines given that you are beating 435 HP out of 520 CID.

The two things LOP do in this situation are reduce temps EGT & CHT and reduce internal pressure in the cylinder without a significant sacrifice of HP or speed.

Every mechanic I have ever talked to (save Braley/Deakin) has had a knee jerk negative towards LOP and their justification is the MFG recommendations.

My own experience running 520 Continentals has been ROP=frequent jug replacement. LOP= longer jug and cylinder life.

You are doing what is correct.... educate yourself and base your own decisions on knowledge.

Many advised me not to buy a 685 as they recited a littany of problems and bad flight characteristics of the 685. Not a single advice giver had ever seen one much less flown one. But they all "heard" they were bad airplanes.

OWT is what they had been hearing.

Read the literature and decide for yourself. After all you will be buying the new engines/jugs/etc. based on the decisions you make.

Good Morning Milt,

This is almost a dreaded 'Me Too' message, but I would like to add that all
engine manufacturers have always recommended lean side operations under
certain conditions.

The Church of Ada has brought such data to the forefront and supplemented it
with hard new data specifically oriented towards the style of engines we
operate.

I spent many thousands of hours carefully operating big round engines well
on the lean side of best power. The EGT gauge was not common or we would surely
have used it to help find the sweet spot.

I am convinced that every present day mechanic and pilot should study the
data presented and then decide how they want to operate the engine they are
associated with. The course is general enough such that aviation users of all
experiences can gain considerable knowledge.

Personally, I agree with Wolfgang on pitch and power, but I don't throw away
any hints from the other camp!

Good advice, Milt.

The same thing happens with Twin Comanches. Rumors say that it's a bastard
to land, but no one that told that story (to me at least) has ever owned or
flown one. I have owned and flown a Twin Comanche for long time and my
findings are that it wouldn't allow the pilot to doze off and expect the
plane to land itself - ala C 172. And I'm fine with that.
