I am the new owner on Jerzy's fire damaged TR4 and just wanted to let people know about a product that maybe would have reduced the chance of the resin catching fire.
There is a type of fire resistant paint called intumescent made by Contico and others that is very effective at blocking fire. http://contegointernational.com/ http://www.flamestop.com/
I highly recommend that you paint the inside of your cowling and both sides of your firewall with this type of paint. You may also want to add fire retardant to other paint or at least to the primer. Anyone know of a fire retardant that can be added to automotive paint?

This material looks very interesting. There is no doubt in my mind that this material could have changed the outcome in at least three of our incidents. On the Contego website they mention that the intumescent coating can be top coated with acrylic enamel. That could be very useful in our applications.
What about the possibility of painting at least the forward fuselage inside, and out, then top coating it with a color coat?
I also like the putty intumescent material from Flamestop. This material would be useful on my firewall that has more then sixty holes in it!

Hi Mark T,
There is also this additive, SPA-200, for car type paint: http://www.universal-fireretardant.com/paint-additives/
I have never tried it but I think this may be good to use in at least the primer if not the color coat.
I do not think the top color coat will work well over the latex based Contego paint but do not know. Maybe it will work well and I think the intumescent paint is much better than just a fire retardant. As much as I like the idea of the superior fire resistance of the intumescent paint I would really not want my nice outside paint to peel or have other issues over time.

I somehow missed the original email on this subject and had to backtrack to Matronics to find it and the link to the company.

After reviewing their site I have to totally agree that it is worth looking into especially for the firewall, cowling and interior surfaces. I don't know how compatible it would be for exterior but the demo results were very impressive.
