Mixture control operation
RV10 – 480 hours
Engine – VANS Lycoming YIO540-D4A5
Mixture Control Cable – VANS Standard Red Vernier RV10 Cable, installed as per instructions
Fuel Injector Servo – Brand: AVSTAR Model: AUX5VA1, MFG Date 2014
Overtime my mixture control cable resistance has increased. I have been flying since May 2016 and while I had forgotten how it operated when new, I felt something needed attention. I disconnected the cable from the mixture control arm and found the cable to be in great shape, operating very smoothly. Next, I operated the mixture control arm moving it from Full to ICO. Felt gritty and took 11-13 in/lbs to operate.
I called AVSTAR seeking guidance and was put through to Rene (Experimental Tech). After sharing my observations, Rene asked me to remove it and send it to his attention. It arrived at AVSTAR on a[url=x-apple-data-detectors://0]Thursday morning[/url] and was shipped back before they left Friday.
Upon its return, I took note that the mixture control arm movement was very smooth. I reinstalled the fuel servo with the new gasket they supplied and flew. They had successfully returned the unit to like new operation.
Yesterday, Eric (AVSTAR manager) gave me a follow up call to see how things were going. I now have 15 hours on the fuel servo…and is genuinely good as new.
Final thoughts….
Mixture controls should operate smoothy and we should revalidate full travel. I did when installed, and at each annual. Increased resistance can restrict the mixture control from achieving full operation.
AVSTAR welcomed my observations, understood the gravity of the situation, and provided a workable solution.

I have an AeroSport carbon fiber panel. It was recommended to me that I purchase a cable 3” longer than stock. I did but it didn’t fit. I will let you have it for $100.

I too have an Aero Sport panel and just ordered the stock McFarlane cables. Still good, 4 yrs and about 300 hrs of flying.
