The beauty of the picture size is resolution and utility after receipt.
Once adulterated, the picture can never serve the same value. As Kevin
mentioned, software can assist those who have the ole technology and
rightfully chose to remain behind. I have yet to hear the compelling
reason for dumbing down a great photo or redacting a valued technical
report for smaller file size over an electronic highway. Maybe each
image should be charged a fee for pixels.
I do acknowledge your right to stay with what you enjoy. It was not
meant condescending only too true that there are always those that want
the runners or racers to slow down the action so they can enjoy it at a
more leisure pace. Life has always tended to unfold just a bit faster
that we desire.
I decided to adapt, use a WD Book (1TB) to save those pictures and now
have over 50,000 unadultered images of RVs. When shared, people go wow,
I had no idea all that information in each picture, then some go, why is
that one so poor. The extra $30 per month for the web service has been
priceless. I do still remember 300baud telephony handset modems and the
thrill of a Kelsey Hayes that could push the envelope to 900. I
wouldn't want my cardiologist using a redacted digital image of my heart
scan when the time comes to renew a medical comes up. Maybe then he
will find I don't have a heart.
If you want to try offline, I will gladly assist readers in providing a
range of cheap technologies available. Sprint 4G for my laptop in
airports has been another boon. I still have my old Motorola BRICK
cellphone and rotary dial phones for waxing nostalgically.

I already posted my views, but let me make some comments to John's
email. I have empathy for the dial-up guys and really do see their
point. I've been on both sides. "live with it" isn't really a good answer.

The only compelling reason is having some consideration for those with
|
slower dial-ups and for their (and my) storage capability. Most all the
pictures on this list are informational and a 640 X 480 picture serves
the purpose. I see no reason to send a huge picture that 1) you can't
see it on you screen without scrolling all over the place (and I realize
there are add-ons that will help out here)and 2)if the pic needs to be
cropped to get the desired resolution .... then do it before sending.

Some folks are just as happy with their dial-up connection, but want to
|
take a drink without the fire hose. It's their choice. And they may
not have a better option .... I don't know.

Any picture that's sent "dumbed down" can be had pristine with a simple
|
request to the owner. I know why YOU want big pictures, and I agree
with you. Big pictures fits your needs, but they're not for everybody.
There's an alternative route for you to get the quality and mega-pixel
pictures, but none for the slow connection guys.

I'm slowly getting mobile .... I use my iPAQ (primarily used for
|
Anywhere Map) when I can get a free hot spot ..... but I don't want to
pay for minutes on my cell phone. That takes bucks away from my
airplane account!!!
Just another perspective,
Linn

Yes. It's here: "I decided to adapt, use a WD Book (1TB) to save those

Sorry, couldn't resist!

John,
I realize that at least where I'm sitting that it's America & everyone
has the right to their own opinions & attitudes. I also realize that
email is an imperfect communication medium & the writer's intent may be
misinterpreted by the reader. Having said that, please allow me to let
you know how your recent posts read to me, and apparently to quite a few
other members.
What I read in your posts is the attitude of, "I ate well well tonight,
so there's no reason for anyone else in the world to be hungry, except
by choice. And even if it's not by choice, X%X# them & the horse their
momma rode in on."
Now, even though that's how I read your posts, I'm going to assume that
your heart is in the right place & you just have the problem of
ignorance. (Your fault, of course, but since I'm such a nice guy I'll
help you out anyway.)
I live on a major 4 lane Federal highway 10 miles from a city of 300,000
and 4 miles from a small community that's had broadband for at least 5
years. Broadband 1st became available to me about 1 year ago. I spent
years begging, pleading, talking to every supplier, including Cell tower
providers, I could contact. No joy on any of them until last year. Here
are some statistics. Until about 2 years ago, less than 50% of the
addresses in the USA had access to broadband in any form except
satellite. It's much better now; 70% of the country can now access
broadband. (Listers in backwater places like Europe and Japan only have
90-99% coverage; poor guys...)
I'm sure that the next thing you'll say is "Let 'em eat satellite." I
researched it for years. I can afford it. Every customer I talked to had
an experience that ranged from 'better than dialup, but not by much' to
'forget it; it's a waste of money', coupled with the fact that all the
services have relatively low download caps, limiting the total megabytes
of download per month (see current discussion). But more to the point:
There are people on this list who's entire flying budget is not much
more than the ~60-$80/month that satellite costs. "X%X# 'em," you say?
My understanding of the reason lists like these exist is to help others,
not public self-stroking. In all but very rare cases, image files larger
than around 200k have no value when viewed on a computer monitor, keep
those less privileged (by either finances or other circumstances beyond
their control) from seeing them and pointlessly denying them the help we
all are trying to offer, and pointlessly chews up internet bandwidth,
ultimately costing all of us more for broadband access.
Maybe we won't ever see eye to eye on this, but I'm hoping that there
will be others that can understand & try to help instead of hinder the
sharing of knowledge.
Charlie
(archive away; if the archive can handle pointless 3megabyte images, it
can handle a 20k text email.)

The bandwidth argument is really a old one when bandwidth was a problem.

How does it cost you more for broadband use?
My neighbor has a Corvette, I really want him to drive a Volkswagen like
I do, because I cannot afford a Corvette
just not fair he can drive a much more expensive car.
