Ok, I'll stir up the pot. I have lived in South Central TX forever and would like to retire soon. Since we listers are scattered all over the place, how about some discussion on a good place to retire with one's RV? I'll start by saying that here in the San Antonio area, the cost of living is moderate, the weather is mostly vfr, there is a moderate amount of flying activity, avgas is lower than most places and the summers are awfully long, hot and humid. Any suggestions on where to retire that include all of the above except the last?

Heck I think it is RV related also. The price of operating a RV here in SoCal - well OK California. I can retire in 4 years and thinking Texas (lived there for a while way back) might get me more RV fun for the money Smile All this info relates to the operation of RV's IMHO.

So Ralph, how you doing with all those state taxes? What did you pay for
sales taxes on the RV9A after you put your blood sweat and tears (and labors
of love)into your very own creation? What do you pay for hanger rent and/or
hanger taxes? What's your annual home property taxes (Prop13: One percent
of the sales price or County assessed value, whichever is HIGHER)?

We pay exorbitant annual DMV fees here in California. An example: I drive
a ten year old Ford Taurus and my fees went up $18 dollars this year to
$108. Not down as it should have; and for a ten year old car! SUV'S
commonly see $300 to $500 annual DMV fees! And what are we doing with all
the taxes (and more to come)? The DMV funds have been hijacked from the
highway fund and redirected into the general fund. The California welfare
system is now five times larger than New York's, we are now the largest
welfare system in the nation by far! And our roads are an embarrassment
with potholes galore, even on the Federal Freeway System!

In short, how do you feel about all the taxes with little or no benefit
except to the California welfare programs (including illegals)? Nothing has
been exaggerated. You've been reading/listening to too much liberal news
(which is about all we've got here in CA)...and believing it apparently my
RV9A brother. It's going to get even worse!

Indeed. I live near Sacramento, and it’s a good life in spite of all the
doom and gloom news, much of which is exaggerated. If you have the money
(Santa Barbara IS expensive to live) it's a great place to live, though I

maybe you've spent some time there before.

Coastal Southern CA is really nice. Suggest you try it out and see if it's

it go for it. This just may be the time to buy???
Many airports, friendly pilots, a multitude of servfces available, great
weather, lots to see and do. Life is short, do what suits you and your

At what point does this not become RV related? I think we have passed that point. Please take this over to the StupidPoliticalRants-List . And Ben, that is your “Truth” not “The Truth.” Terry, we are not trying to censor the list, we are trying to follow the lists self imposed guidelines being inclusive not divisive.

Guys.... The people in California are the smartest critters in the world.. In fact just this week they made an amazing discovery..
Heaviest Element Yet Known to Science Discovered February 15, 2010 - 14:09 ET
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California has now identified with certainty the heaviest element known to science.
The new element, Pelosium (PL), has one neutron, 25 assistant neutrons, 88 deputy neutrons, and 198 assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 312.
These 312 particles are held together by forces called morons, which are surrounded by vast quantities of lepton-like particles called peons.
Pelosium is inert, and has no charge and no magnetism. Nevertheless, it can be detected because it impedes every reaction with which it comes into contact. A tiny amount of Pelosium can cause a reaction that would normally take less than a second, to take from 4 days to 4 years to complete.
Pelosium has a normal half-life of 2 years. It does not decay, but instead undergoes a biennial reorganization in which a portion of the assistant neutrons and deputy neutrons exchange places.
Pelosium mass will increase over time, since each reorganization will promote many morons to become isodopes.
This characteristic of moron promotion leads some scientists to believe that Pelosium is formed whenever morons reach a critical concentration. This hypothetical quantity is referred to as critical morass.
When catalyzed with money, Pelosium becomes Senatorium, an element that radiates just as much energy as Pelosium since it has half as many peons but twice as many morons.

If I could afford California, I would look here first. More attractive to me than the frozen white wastelands. http://www.caribbeanislandbrokers.com/islands-for-sale Ahh, but I can afford colorful Southern Utah with fantastic flying.

Guys.... The people in California are the smartest critters in the world.. In fact just this week they made an amazing discovery..
Heaviest Element Yet Known to Science Discovered
February 15, 2010 - 14:09 ET

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California has now
identified with certainty the heaviest element known to science.

The new element, Pelosium (PL), has one neutron, 25 assistant
neutrons, 88 deputy neutrons, and 198 assistant deputy neutrons,
giving it an atomic mass of 312.

These 312 particles are held together by forces called morons, which
are surrounded by vast quantities of lepton-like particles called
peons.

Pelosium is inert, and has no charge and no magnetism. Nevertheless,
it can be detected because it impedes every reaction with which it
comes into contact. A tiny amount of Pelosium can cause a reaction
that would normally take less than a second, to take from 4 days to 4
years to complete.

Pelosium has a normal half-life of 2 years. It does not decay, but
instead undergoes a biennial reorganization in which a portion of the
assistant neutrons and deputy neutrons exchange places.

Pelosium mass will increase over time, since each reorganization will
promote many morons to become isodopes.

This characteristic of moron promotion leads some scientists to
believe that Pelosium is formed whenever morons reach a critical
concentration. This hypothetical quantity is referred to as critical
morass.

When catalyzed with money, Pelosium becomes Senatorium, an element
that radiates just as much energy as Pelosium since it has half as
many peons but twice as many morons.

Bob, You forgot slider vs tilt canopy and taildragger vs nosedragger.

And as far as where to retire (or not)... Don't even think about NJ - it
has the cold like MN and the taxes and corruption like CA - although the
countryside is very nice here in northwestern NJ.

HA! Where are the core concentrations of RVers? It's always seemed like
Texas, the Pacific Northwest, Minnesota, and Southern California.

Are there any other hotbeds. Ohio Valley? Georgia?

Wherever one retires to, I assume one would want to have (a) a good airport
and (b) good airport friends around. Taxes are no fun, but at the other end
of the spectrum, I guess I wouldn't want to end up in some god forsaken
place with a dirt and rock runway, a broken down airport dog, and a rusty
can that inspires the day's intellectual highlight: figuring out why
somebody can spit as far as the can and some people can't.

Oh, and you don't want to go where there's a lot of slider RVs that weren't
primed and have nosewheels.

Lot's of RV's here in Florida, too. I exchanged Minnesota for Florida and lucked into a nice little airport (KEVB) and lots of good airport friends. There are four RV's being built on the airport right now.

Have been laying low on this discussion because I didn't want to give away
the secret of the RVators in the Carolinas. But can't control myself any
longer!.

The Carolinas........
Beautiful mountains to the North for cool flights in the summer and color
tours flights in the fall
Beautiful ocean seashore/beaches to the East for three seasons. Sunny warm
Florida in the South for the winter trips.
And the birth place of aviation with many RV friends to help enjoy it. Can't
think of a place I would rather be with my 6A nose wheel slider.

Just because you do not think the subject is interesting does not mean it is not rv related. Just like primer, where the third wheel is on the back where it belongs (I could not help it), tip up or slider. Some find interesting some do not. That is the way of things. Laugh about it, ignor it whatever. Just thank god you live in a country where we can enjoy flying, building and friendly arguments. It is all good. Lighten up enjoy the folks and the beautiful day.

OK, for all you guys that can’t afford California:

Delete yourselves from the state, and leave.

Quit whining about it here. Pretty simple I think.

Me, I can afford it, and my RV build, and my current certificated airplane, thank you very much. So I’ll stay.
