Dear Listmates,
I am a new CH2000 owner, that is the certified airplane with the 115 hp
Lycoming. Mine is serial no 20-0010 a 1995 model. One of the things I
noticed about the airplane is a bizarre seat design? and cockpit windows
that are heavily crazed. This airplane is on its 3rd or 4th set of
windows in only 12 years of life and 1150 hours TT. It spent a lot of
time in New Hampshire where it was a flight school trainer. Any Zenair
CH2T or CH2000 owners out there willing to suggest alternatives to the
LEXAN windows that obviously don't work with this plane very well. I have
been around airplanes for 45 years and an owner for 32 and this plane has
some of the worst windows I have seen.
AMD in Georgia offers a factory rebuilt on the airplane for $20,000 US and
factory rebuild on the cockpit area for $6000 US but neither includes
paint. I am looking for information on the costs of replacing all of the
windows in terms of raw materials and labor? and I am also looking for
information on any one who has had the factory cockpit upgrade done? How
long did it take? Were you happy with the results? Did Zenair meet
their schedule for completion of your airplane?
If this is not an appropriate list for CH2000 questions please suggest an
alternative web site or organization?

Rocky:
If you can find a builder of a CH640, you may get some
help there. I understand the ch640 is similar to the
CH2000. Steve Adams in Evans Georgia, Doug Geese of
Churubusco, Indiana and Kay C Caldwell of Gunnison,
Utah are building CH640's according to
http://www.frappr.com/zenithch640
Also, you can contact Zenith Aircraft in Mexico, MO
and they can hook you up with a builder or two.
We had a guy on this list that used to post photos
regularly but I'm embarassed that I can't remember his
name (help me out here guys). He is finished and
flying and had an excellent website with good photos.
I hope this helps,

Scott,
I think the guy you talking about is Jeff Paden.
You can see his web site at the following address. Effectively, is Web sit
is interesting and may be Rocky could find answer to his questions of Canopy

I have a CH640 which has an identical canopy to the Alarus. I know they changed the canopy at some point when they started calling it an "Alarus" model, which is similar to what I have. The windscreen and the door windows are plexiglass, and the rear windows are lexan. I don't know if the earlier models had lexan in the door. Lexan scratches really easily, and I would bet that they weren't babied when used as a trainer. Mines only been flying for a little over a year, but the windows don't have any sratches. I also am very careful when cleaning the lexan because it is so soft. Being a certified plane, I think your options might be pretty limited as far as replacing the lexan with plexiglass. I don't think there is any difference between the plexi that they use for the windscreen and door windows and what they use in other aircraft. In fact I think they get them from LP Aeroplastics, which makes windows for numerous aircraft.
Changing out the rear windows is simple and cheap; I scratched one badly trying to get some paint off it during the build and had to change it out. All you need is a sheet of lexan cut to size and a handfull of rivets. The door windows and windscreen would be a lot more work, since they are epoxied in place, and need to be already formed to fit the aircraft. You might try calling LP Aeroplastics to see if they do indeed carry the windows and windshield for the CH2000.
