Hey all, my 16 year old TruTrack DSB-C type servo in my wing (aileron)
got tight and binding. Interestingly it releases once in a while like
the clutch releases but then binds again. So I pulled it out today,
and will start looking into replacement. I would also like to
tear it open if it's something that I can do without wrecking anything
inside, to see what broke. Does anyone have any teardown pics or
has anyone had a servo rebuilt by TruTrak (I guess now Bendix) before?
Just interested in how much $$ I'll be out to get it fixed up and
working again. I'd like to keep one as a spare from here out,
since I have 2 planes that could use them.

Tim,

I have the servo you’re looking for and it has never been used. I can provide you pics and details if you wish. I’ll take $375 plus shipping if you’re interested.

I think roll servos are about $500.

I’ve never torn one apart, but you may be able to contact Bruce at Mid Continent, as hey are the TruTrak service center. Best option is finding someone who has one, which has already been offered. Going price for a used one should be about $250.

Thanks to those who have replied so far.   I do have a friend somewhat
near by that has
a pair of servos that he isn't using that he's been meaning to sell, so
I'm going to
take him up on that offer so that I have some spares.

Tim, your servo issues were a little shocking to read. I hadn't seen
those threads.
And even more shocking to hear it wasn't a single incident.   In the
end, it was
comforting seeing the post that said they have adjusted the pin and hole
size to
prevent further issues.  That's probably why mine that's a 2005 variety
is fine, but
that some of the newer ones are having issues.  The ones I'll be getting
from
my friend are newer, so I should plan to inspect and secure those roll
pins before
ever using them.  Your pics were good.

In the meantime, I removed the motor from my gear box.  Everything in my
gear box
is fine.  The motor itself is where my issues were, so it's a bit
different.  What I found
was that if I let the motor sit, it would spin more freely for a
revolution or so, but then
get tight and stay tight, until I let it sit a while again.  Not sure
why..maybe some magnetics
from rotating it?  Anyway, after pulling the center core out, I didn't
see any real issues,
but, one of the 4 screws was corroded so obviously moisture was in that
area.
And there was corrosion around the bottom plate where it meets the round
sealing
area on the motor.   The bearings on the motor were fine, and I didn't
see any
real visible reason for it jamming.  However, after pulling it apart,
some particles
came out, probably either being corrosion that was crumbling and
released, or
something that was inside.  Not a lot, mind you, but the tolerance of
that rotor
in the surrounding coils is pretty tight.  And once I put it back in, it
spun much
more freely.

That was it, for tonight.  Tomorrow night I'll take some gentle scotch
brite to
it inside to make sure any rust and corrosion is gone, and wipe it down
with something to clean it up.  Maybe throw a little lightweight oil on the
bearings, and put some light oil on the screw shafts to keep them a
little more
corrosion free.  I think this servo of mine will still have life left in it.
With 2 planes to maintain though, I'll gladly keep a pair of servos around
for spares.

Thanks to you all again for the replies.  I'll take some pics if I can
remember to
do that when it's apart again.

Tim

TruTrak overhauled a roll servo for me in Aug 2019.  The cost was $380 and it looked <brand new>, including the serial number!  They turned it around the same day.

Was that when it was still TruTrak, or through Bendix?  I'm a little leery of anything but
the original TruTrak folks, since the stories become less positive after that purchase.
I would hope that good service will continue, but I'd feel more comfortable if
the TruTrak guys still do their own repairs.

I dealt with TT.  Since then I've had a couple conversations with Bendix.  Same experience as others have reported:  not as helpful.

Are you going to take apart the failed servo and do any kind of
failure analysis? If not, I would be willing to open and take a look.
I too am using the same servo's. 10 years of flying and 1400 hours so
far.

I thought I posted a follow-up post on this but I did tear it apart.
The base that the
stepper motor is mounted on contains all the gearing for the autopilot.
All of that
was fine.  The stepper motor itself was tight at times.  I'd turn it and
after sitting
for a few minutes, it would usually turn ok for a partial revolution,
and then get
tight.  I removed the base of the motor, pulled out the center rotor,
and the bearings
were fine.  Nothing much out of place, but, I did have one of the 4
screws holding
the motor together that was corroded, and some corrosion between the bottom
of the coil area and the base of the motor.  There was a little
particulate on the
placemat after disassembly.  The clearances are pretty tight inside, and
my guess
is that it was just corrosion that was the issue.  After inserting the
rotor again,
everything was much more free again.   I didn't get a chance last night
to clean it
all up, but I plan to do a 2nd disassembly and cleaning and lubrication and
assembly and then my guess is that the servo will be fine.   I bought a
spare pair
from a friend of mine that should show today, but I'll try my old one
first and if it
works, I'll just keep using it for the time being.

More to come.

Tim,

Some stepper motor rotors will lose a fair amount of their magnetism when removed from their stator.  This causes the torque of the motor to be significantly reduced.  I don't know if this will be the case with your motor, but it's worth watching out for.

I'm assuming it's not an issue with short-term removal?
It would be pretty crazy if pulling it out for 5 minutes reduced the life by a lot.
I don't intend to keep it out very long. Just enough to clean it up.

Tim,

Some stepper motor rotors will lose a fair amount of their magnetism when removed from their stator.  This causes the torque of the motor to be significantly reduced.  I don't know if this will be the case with your motor, but it's worth watching out for.

I thought I posted a follow-up post on this but I did tear it apart.
The base that the
stepper motor is mounted on contains all the gearing for the autopilot.
All of that
was fine.  The stepper motor itself was tight at times.  I'd turn it and
after sitting
for a few minutes, it would usually turn ok for a partial revolution,
and then get
tight.  I removed the base of the motor, pulled out the center rotor,
and the bearings
were fine.  Nothing much out of place, but, I did have one of the 4
screws holding
the motor together that was corroded, and some corrosion between the bottom
of the coil area and the base of the motor.  There was a little
particulate on the
placemat after disassembly.  The clearances are pretty tight inside, and
my guess
is that it was just corrosion that was the issue.  After inserting the
rotor again,
everything was much more free again.   I didn't get a chance last night
to clean it
all up, but I plan to do a 2nd disassembly and cleaning and lubrication and
assembly and then my guess is that the servo will be fine.   I bought a
spare pair
from a friend of mine that should show today, but I'll try my old one
first and if it
works, I'll just keep using it for the time being.

More to come.

Yes, for that reason, I have never taken steppers apart. If they are
rough for any reason, I would just order a new one from Amazon and
replace it. I use steppers for robotics. I have never seen one fail.
But, they are not sealed. Humidity could cause corrosion.

It is a NEMA 23 type. I wasn't having a great time trying to find the exact same servo, however. Maybe you or someone who deals with these things would. I think the best I found was mid-$300's for price. If the motors could be bought for $100 it would be a no brainer. Here's the info off my DSB-C servo. I noticed that the newer ones I got from my friend don't have the manufacturer info. Also, the URLs of most websites I found are either broken, or domains missing. Superior ElectricSlo-Syn MotorImpedance Protected Rockford ILStepping MotorType KML062F034.4 VDC 1.5Awww.slosyn.com200 Steps/RevConnect PER2138030449217954 leads, 2.93 ohms, 16.9 mH inductance. Maybe that will make it easier to find the match.

was fine. The stepper motor itself was tight at times. I'd turn it and
after sitting
for a few minutes, it would usually turn ok for a partial revolution,
and then get
tight. I removed the base of the motor, pulled out the center rotor,
and the bearings
were fine. Nothing much out of place, but, I did have one of the 4
screws holding
the motor together that was corroded, and some corrosion between the bottom
of the coil area and the base of the motor. There was a little
particulate on the
placemat after disassembly. The clearances are pretty tight inside, and
my guess
is that it was just corrosion that was the issue. After inserting the
rotor again,
everything was much more free again. I didn't get a chance last night
to clean it
all up, but I plan to do a 2nd disassembly and cleaning and lubrication and
assembly and then my guess is that the servo will be fine. I bought a
spare pair
from a friend of mine that should show today, but I'll try my old one
first and if it
works, I'll just keep using it for the time being.

More to come.

Are you going to take apart the failed servo and do any kind of
failure analysis? If not, I would be willing to open and take a look.
I too am using the same servo's. 10 years of flying and 1400 hours so
far.

I'd like to keep one as a spare from here out,
since I have 2 planes that could use them.

would you measure the length of the stepper from the face to the back
end. I think that size motor is available for $23 on amazon.

Should be pretty much a drop in replacement.

Typically the motors are driven with a constant current driver. It
does not matter that the winding voltage is 4 volts. The drivers will
chop the current to maintain the 1.5 amps. As the motor speed
increases there is a back EMF that has to be overcome. Like I said,
this should be a drop in replacement for that stepper motor.

Just my opinion.
