Dan,

Don't recall if I've sent you this suggestion yet so just
in case . . .

There'a a dirt-cheap line of hall effect current sensors
you might consider for AC measurements on the
alternator study.

https://tinyurl.com/2gvhny4z

These can be used for either AC or DC measurements. They
feature a VCC/2 output for zero current. Hence, DC currents
are resolved by subtracting 2.5V from output. For AC, you
capacitively couple an AC voltmeter to the output. Use
a TRUE RMS reading voltmeter . . . waveform of the AC current
under light loads will be really wonky so an averaging
meter would suffer considerable error.

You can run a 'scope on the output along with the voltmeter.
The output waveform will be a good representation of
the signal in question.

I used to have a few of these laying around but can't
put my hands on 'em at the moment. May have left them
on the last job. I like to keep some around 'cause they're
so easy to use and the price is certainly right!

Bob . . .

Un impeachable logic: George Carlin asked, "If black boxes
survive crashes, why don't they make the whole airplane
out of that stuff?"
