Hi Art-
I wouldn't alter the battery box at all.  In my case, I used plywood to shim the battery.  Should I want to go back to a 'standard' sized battery in the future, all I have to do is scrap the shims.  Easy, and offers future flexibility.
FWIW-

Glenn,
That was my initial approach. Now that the new battery has proven itself, I know that I am not going back to a larger, heavier battery. This AGM has proven itself through hot and cold weather to hold a charge better and crank the engine faster.
I had to remove the engine for a rebuild. Since it is out of the way, I am taking the opportunity to clean up some miscellaneous stuff in the engine compartment, like swapping out the (now oversized) battery box.
Cheers,
