Richard, thanks for this insight. My mechanic is great and well known locally, so I never take his opinions lightly. My guess is that he did replace several engines and never looked back at the reformulated oils. Doing some on-line reading, the Aero shell sight has an article about the original 100% synthetics that caused a lot of lead related sludge around the rings, leading to high cylinder wear and failures. Per this article, the blends of mineral and synthetic took care of this.

The reason I ask is that, due to coming cold weather, I am putting AeroShell 15-50 back into my plane. I noticed that after switching over to Aero 100W Plus this late Spring, I saw a higher oil loss & lower oil pressures, so much so that I had to reset my alarm limit on my GRT 4000 monitor [after confirming level, etc.]

I will have to repost about what I see after I switch back.

Any other observations from experience out there?

John

I've heard of this before. Are you seeing lower initial oil pressure?
or after the oil is at 190 degrees or so? I did some testing of
motorcycle racing oils when I was going to school. The initial
viscosity is, indeed, a LOT lower in multi-grade oils. But, they
didn't degrade as fast at higher temps, I tested them to 240 degrees,
as single grade oils. For what it's worth, the Castrol Racing oil was
the most consistent of the oils I tested.
