Maintenance quality has two aspects, as seen from my perspective as an
owner. First, the legal aspect. Regs require specific qualifications to
return an aircraft to service after any maintenance, even the so-called PM.
To have those qualifications, and individual has to have done little more
than pass some exams. Second, the capability aspect. This is where the
problem really appears. As in all other aspects of human life, a few are
very good at what they do, the masses are barely adequate, and another few
are pathetic to the point of dangerous. The reason that I am currently
preparing to take the A&P exams is that as an owner/operator I just cannot
put up with the "barely adequate" work performed by the "legally qualified"
mechanics I have found everywhere (with a few notable exceptions). Our
maintenance fiascos prompted my wife to declare that if I let anyone work on
our plane when I wasn't standing beside them watching, she would not fly in
it any more. I have tried the range of service facilities from one-man shops
to FAA certified Repair stations, and it makes no difference. The
capability, or lack thereof , is universal.

Are you going the experience route and have the FSDO sign off? or are you going to one of the A&P tech schools?
I understand where you are at, as I went the experience route 4 years ago, after more than 25 years of doing my own work under supervision.
Good luck. It is real nice being able to sign off your own work, but carries a lot of responsibility as well.

Yes, I have the 8610-2 forms already signed by FSDO. I am thinking of
attending a class to prep for the Oral/Practical, but am studying for the
writtens on my own. I am using The ASA books by Dale Crane as my study
material.

I went the same route that you are going. Might I suggest the baker school in Nashville? I felt they did a really good job prepping me for the O&P. As a point of interest, on the morning of my testing when I arrived at the FBO where the examiner worked, I was informed that the FAA would be spot checking the test!! They claimed they were checking the examiner- not me(yea, right). So, all day(8:00 till 3:30) I had an FAA guy(the FISDO manager no less) looking over my shoulder! That DE threw everything he could think of at me and he only stumped me on one question(you ever had your brain freeze for just a few seconds?). When it was finally over, the examiner said congradulations, you passed! I said thank you very much and then the FAA guy says the same thing and I say thanks to him as well and he says- " you don't understand, you are the first guy I have ever seen that passed the test when I've sat in on the exam!" I later confirmed that with the school, he was not kidding. They about had a heart attack when I told them what had happened and who had sat in on my test.
