I and a friend are at Jabiru USA taking the engine class this weekend. He ordered a 3300 which he is yet to take delivery on. There has been some discussion as to whether the 3300 is too powerful for the airframe and that a 2200 might be a much better fit. I'm building a 601 so I hope some of you 701 pilots can share your experiences and advice.

Tim,
I have a Jab 2200 on my 701 (Dry weight 570 lbs). It seems to perform close
to an 80 HP Rotax 912.
As draggy as the 701 is (which increases with airspeed), it is not clear if
much is to be gained in cruise. Take off and climb might be better, but it
will be heavier.

Jab 2200 85hp (at) 3300RPM =135ft-lb prop torque

Jab 3300 120hp (at) 3300RPM = 191ft-lbs prop torque

912 80 hp (at) 5500 ROM = 76 ft-lbs x 2.43 reduction = 185 ft-lbs prop torque

912s 100hp (at) 5800 RPM = 90 ft-lbs x 2.43 reduction =218ft-lbs prop torque
Number for Jab from their web site, Rotax numbers from Zenith web site.
Though I'm not sure about the reduction ratio on the 912.
Looks to me like the 3300 is the best match. Kinda like a light Corvair engine!

Now that you mention it, I wonder how the Corvair does compare and, how that translates into performance, especially climb.

I forgot to mention that the Jabs are both limited I believe, to a 60 inch prop. I believe it is a crank limitation due to mass for their limit, I could be wrong its just something I think that I remember. There is more to prop thrust then length but it is a prime component. Some place on the Zenith site they mention the need to swing a 70 or 72 inch prop for good STOL performance.

Thanks all for your comments. My friend changed his order to a 2200.

The prop on a Jab is shorter but that is partly due to the fact that it turns 3300 rpm at full power. A longer prop and you could experience the tips going supersonic. The 3300 swings a 64 inch prop.

I know there have been some issues with the crank in the Corvair but have not heard of any on the Jab.

Your correct about the RPM and tip speed, but I believe that there was a rotational mass limit. And strangely, I remember that I heard about it on a corvair website? Any way, 66" and 3300 rpm (at) 0F is Mach .905 so 64" maybe a MFG safety margin? Then again, it is entirely possible that I'm mistaken Shocked Been known to happen Surprised
