Noel,
I don't know where you came up with your ideas about why airlines don't allow GPS use but they are wrong. As a former airline pilot I have personally seen the results of a passenger using one as it effected my instruments during an instrument approach. I had the flight attendant hunt down the user and the erroneous indications stopped. GPS /cell phones can and do effect the instruments.

The GPS is another quintal of fish... They actually have microprocessors in them that certainly can for whatever reason interfere with your onboard system that drives your EFIS. If the passenger had been in a different seat you may never have known he was there... and maybe you would have.

Problem for you is today even some phones have more computing power than it took to put a man in orbit. This means Blackberries and the sort can interfere with your instruments. Hand held receivers for com frequencies and straight cell phones probably won’t interfere with you in the slightest.

I hope you wrote up the incident in the log so the avionics guys can go over your systems to make sure that it wasn’t a wakeup call for a more serious problem.

Personally I have no problem with the restrictions on what you can and can’t take on a plane. I generally tell anyone who has to know when I’m landing so using a sky phone, for me, actually interferes with the enjoyment of the flight. I’m sure there are those who would like to use their laptops in flight but with the RF noise they produce... no thanks.

My point is that not all the regs are based on the possibility of interference with the operation of the plane.

Noel
