Ron:

Is it the air flowing through the oil cooler COMPLETELY isolated from the air that flows through the cylinders? If so, what means do you use to create a seal to keep both air flows separated.

Did you build the oil cooler attachments?

Thanks for your support!

José

My oil cooler is located right in front of cooling fins on the Jabiru 2200 oil pan or case.  There is about 0.5 inch clearance between the two. I have a bump-out over the cooler on the cowling with an opening at the bottom of the bump-out. This is so the air coming in the opening on the bottom cowl can flow over the oil cooler/engine case and then exit without pressurizing the bottom of the engine compartment.

When I got my cowling, John McBean was not in business. If he has the smooth cowl for the Kitfox IV, I would certainly look at that. My dealings with John have been excellent.

Just to throw another thought out there, Jose, I don't have the bump-
out that Ron does, and I have the exact same cowl (also purchased
before John McBean got into business). I just brought my cowl a tiny
bit more forward than Ron did, and this gave me a little bit more
clearance between the cowl and the cooler. However, I think Ron chose
to bump his cowl for the air exit rather than the clearance
needs....eh, Ron? I have found that I didn't need to exit the air
before the rear cowl exit....mine also works, and cools the engine
just fine.
Because these Skyfox cowls are kinda long, the builder can choose to
move them forward and down to suit where the engine sits, and that is
all based on how the engine mount is configured. I really had a lot
of fun (NOT!!) trying to fit my cowl to the top of the engine, to the
oil cooler placement, and to the back of the prop flange. And of
course, fitting it to the windshield would have been a real pain in
the ass, if it hadn't been for Dave Jalanti's excellent article about
that very thing. If you're not aware, do a Google search for Dave,
and the article that he wrote in Kitplanes Magazine back in 2000 and
2001, I believe it was. I also think that there's a CD that might be
available from Pete Krotje regarding the same.

There, like any good NASCAR driver, I think I've got all the sponsors
names in, and now we go to commercial......: )
