Is there an ideal location for the ELT and ELT Antenna on an RV-8A?
Thanks,
Robin

Hi Robin,
Here's a ton of documentation on what I did with the installation of the ELT and antenna. I've got the unit that takes a GPS serial input and transmits your last coordinates as well. Pretty cool feature. Lots of dialog on the various pages about setting it up, etc.

Robin,
I would suggest that you NOT follow Matt's installation of the ELT, as it does not meet the recommendations of the FAA for ELT mounting. The FAA recommends mounting the ELT where:
#1 A 100 pound weight can be set on the area of the ELT, without any flexing of the mount.
#2 The mount can support a 300 pound load without breaking.
These recommendations are to prevent failure of the mount during a crash AND to prevent the ELT from triggering during a hard landing, due to a flimsy mount. The battery/bell-crank cover is flimsy, even with a doubler.
A better location would be on the floor [in front of, under or behind the battery/bell-crank cover]. Place the bracket between the lower longeron and the fore/aft belly rib. This will give you the required strength.
I can supply photos off list if desired.
