I was just looking at an old Kitplanes mag (May 1994) this morning and in the completions section was this exact TR-1. At the time he said he had 50 hours. The cut down vertical worries me a little. If I recall correctly it also worried Vance.

Ken was one of the early builders; he and his wife came to Oshkosh in 1992 to see the KIS. Ken was really i没pressed with the new TR-1C that debuted that year. He had already decided on KIS but he went for a test ride and even got his wife to go for a ride too. That was a real statement because Ken needed her approval to buy the kit.
You notice the serial number is KM3 - Ken was no stranger to building he had built a real nice KR-2 (#KM1). One day while fly the VW engine quit and he set it down on a farm road the best he could. He survived with only a few scratches but the KR was totaled. Ken's wife thought the KIS was a much safer design and was in favor of the KIS.
He bought the kit and started right in on it with the help of his son. They worked through the winter keeping the stove going in the garage while the lay-ups cured. Unfortunately Ken was one of those builders that had severe reactions to the composites. He had some medical issues prior to building and the composites did not help the situation. He got through the reactions and in less than a year he flew mid 1993. The flowing year in 1994 Ken was the first KIS builder to fly to Oshkosh. He was one of the early adapters of the Subaru into an airplane and received calls from around the world asking about his installation.
The time shown in the ad (120 hours) sounds about right. Those are all Ken's flying hours. After he sold the airplane Ken told me it probably won't fly again, and that the new owner was taking it apart to make changes. It looks like it became low priority (Nice RV in the background).
Oh, I forgot the story... you might be wondering what happened to Ken's #KM2? It was a bigger kitfox type of airplane built of steel tube, his own design. He wanted to finish it so he sold his KIS for exactly what it cost out of pocket.
Mark may be right about the tail, if you check under the left wing there is a patch where Ken couldn't quite hold it on the center line while landing at Oshkosh...he took out a runway light and they didn't even ask him to pay for it. I recall Ken did consult with Rich on the tail mod, you'd have to measure it for sure but the Rudder may be extended.
The airplane is built well. Ken was experienced in composites but the finish is not first class. You have to keep in mind he was having reactions and couldn't afford excessive exposure time while doing the filling and finish. I'd fly it! after I put the tail back on (and a motor). Hmm I might just call!
Sorry for the excessive verb age, but that is the story of the McCormick TR-1C as I know it

I remember another kitplanes article a bit later in the 90's when there was
a review of what people thought about their KIS TR1s where this one was
again featured and he had made a statement that didnt like the shape of the
vertical stabiliser which he called a "witches hat" and had changed the
design .

Hi Ted,
That is the buy of the year. At the moment I have too many project aircraft and too many projects in general or I would jump on it!

Hi Ted,
I looked at the pictures of your project on bob reeds site. It looks really nice but I you took it in a different direction than I would have with the seat arrangment and yokes. I think most people would like your direction, but I have some specific things in mind.
I am about to start on the all carbon fiber Cruiser with Mark Kettering. I was hoping for a fuselage with minimal work done. Carbon is great except you can't put antennas inside of it so I would prefer a fiberglass fuselage and carbon wing like my TR-1.
Good luck with the sale. You might be better off selling the engine and keeping the airframe.
Cheers,
Scott

Scott, there was another TR-4 offered for sale by Todd Winegar in September of 2010. It is a stock build and all major components are completed. Not sure if he sold it or not the price was reasonable, I haven't had enough time to track down all the leads I have. This could be the kit Cody bought, I am not sure.

I thought I would revive this thread to let everyone know (the 20 or so of you that frequent the forum) what happened to this airplane...well Minnesota has one less KIS, and Pennsylvania has one more KIS. This past weekend I made the long trip to pick up the McCormick TR-1C. She has a new home at my house, and the family is very excited we have a KIS back after Rich had both of his stolen from him.
She needs a lot of work, a past owner wasn't very nice to her, but thanks to her most recent owner Kevin, she was saved from the junk yard and I can't thank him enough for that.
Attached are a couple of pics - one as I rolled up to the house after the 20 hour nonstop ride from Minnesota, the other is me, sister Carol (already screaming to get out), and brother Eric in the pilots seat.
In the paperwork was yet another lead on a TR-1 - Roland MacDonald from Southern Pines, NC It was sold and the paperwork is incomplete but it is a flying KIS, N94MK.

Mark,
That is GREAT NEWS! Thanks for sharing with us and sticking with us. I thought I had a picture of that plane on my web site and I was right, see the link below.
http://www.kisbuild.onfinal18.com/KIS-TR1-Web/KISPhotos/tr1-1.JPG
It was a very good looking airplane that deserves to have a lot of TLC.

Thanks everybody for your kind words and encouragement. I am happy to be a member of this limited fraternity by more than just my name.
Robert, I knew you had a pic of Kens airplane, I sent all my friends to your site to see what I was getting into.
Scott, she has no engine. A Jabiru engine was being fitted to it but sadly it was sold off days before the owner I bought the airplane from got to the scene. The airplanes interim owner had died and it became a fire sale of sorts to get rid of all the stuff in the hanger.
What does it need? More like what doesn't it need! I haven't had enough time to go over the entire airplane yet but the list of things to do is very long. It has a lot of hanger rash - fairings are cracked or broken. The rudder was banged up against a wall and is split open, and of course the top of the tail has to be replaced. Ken has a bell-crank in front of station 189 with a push rod to activate the rudder. I am not so sure it yields a full right and left movement. The tail wheel springs are inside the fuselage a cool set up but I don't know if this will remain under my care. It has a stock elevator with no trim tab, Ken had some sort of spring deal attached to the elevator control which I am not to comfortable with. It will probably get an entirely new elevator, Scott I am interested in your next move for yours - I don't like the big gap under the current one at full up elevator during landing and I don't like vgs either. On Kens last flight upon landing he hit a post with the left wing - there is a 6+ inch hole in the left wing tank - that is bad but the inside of the tank looks great! There are no fuel senders installed. There is no electrical system left but a few wires here and there (all non aircraft wire). The panel is empty but for airspeed, and turn and bank. The rest of the gages were all automotive and are all disconnected and most likely are trash. One interesting thing - on the inside firewall is a remotely operated fire extinguisher for the engine compartment. But its hook up is missing its activation method. So you see I really have a project...won't make Oshkosh this year, Darn!
