Has anybody here converted their engine from the old Magnetos to the "P" Mag with the built in generator? If so what do you think about the benefits versus the cost?

My magnetos have just hit the 500hr point and I am debating whether to overhaul them or just bite the bullet and go with two new "P" mags.

I have had dual pmags on my parallel valve IO-360 since new. It has 185 hours on it and 3 years now. I had to send the pmags back once for an "AD" and I had to send one of them back due to problems with that mag keeping the timing. All I paid was shipping both times. I have never had a problem in flight though. You should see a noticable improvement in fuel efficiency and a big improvement in starting and hot starts.

I think the pmags are the best option out there. I originally had aircraft spark plugs, but switched to auto plugs. They say the auto plugs give a bit more power and they are cheap. I just put new ones in every annual.

I initally set the timing right at TDC, but the engine would sometimes kick back on starting. I recommend setting it to 5 degrees past TDC to elimate any chance of kickback. Then use the high advance curve (which is the same as the low advance curve with the timing set at 0 instead of 5 degrees past TDC). This was okayed with the pmag guys. I also have 10:1 compression which probably makes kick back worse.

From a cost standpoint it probably makes sense just to overhaul your mags. You can get an overhaul kit and do it yourself pretty cheap. If you were looking at buying new mags vs the pmags I would be 100% for the pmags. If you are going to send your out for overhaul then I think it would still be a good buy to get the pmags and ebay your old mags. The pmags should increase your mpg noticably and you might save money on spark plugs in the long run depending on how often you change the aircraft style plugs.

Scott

I installed 1 pmag on my 0320 KIS TR1, (I already had the Jeff Rose on the other mag), when the 1 remaining bendix mag went south. It did cost more money than a mag replacement but I thing it was worth it although I only have about 6 hours flying time on it now. The setup on the Pmag is so simply compared to the regular mag.
