I have a 1997 IO-240 and the fuel pump started leaking fuel again. It did this once before and I had it rebuilt. The engine only has 518 HRS TT. Is there a problem with the pump? Do the newer engines have the same pump?
Any suggestions?

Hello Tim, I am sorry to hear that you are having a fuel leak problem with the fuel pump on your IO-240 XXX engine. You wrote:
1) “Is there a problem with the pump?”
The simple answer to that question is: Yes. The complete answer can get complicated.
2) “Do the newer engines have the same pump?”
The simple answer to that question is: Probably the same basic IO240 BXB pump, but with some different subscript numbers attached to the basic pump P/N 653351. But again the answer can get complicated.
3) “Any suggestions?”
Yes. First download and review in some detail these two publications so that you have a fairly firm grasp of exactly what fuel injection assembly you have on your engine (probably a P/N 649059XX-X) and which pump you are dealing with (probably a P/N 653351-XXX) and some past history on modifications and changes to these fuel injection assemblies and pumps.

Then, with these details readily at hand, give CM technical support people a call at 888-826-5465 and get their advice on what to do next. Please let us know how you make out. Thanks.

PS: For example: My IO-240 B9B engine, serial number 806236, manufactured on 9/1/1999 came with fuel pump P/N 653351-2. On 7/3/2001 I complied with TCM CSB 01-1 to remove that pump and install pump P/N 653351-2A3.

Hello OC,
Thank you for your response, I have the same fuel pump that you had. Also, my engine S/N 806822 mfg. 4/18/97. Interesting that it is a higher S/N than yours that was made almost 2 1/2 years later. I will read the info you sent but what is the difference in the -2A3 pump.
It was a close call yesterday, I was able to divert to a field about 7 miles away and just made it with the rpm continuing to fall off. The electric boost pump kept it running.

Good move – must have been a significant leak from the engine driven fuel
pump.
Q1) What electric boost pump do you have installed?
Q2) What fuel pressure(s) does it generate?
Q3) So your plane is now grounded at that other than home field?
Q4) Was the engine driven fuel pump leak external so that you could see the
fuel dripping / running out with the engine running?

That I don’t know, but the change was significant enough for TCM to put out
CSB01-1 and provide me the new -2A3 pump at their expense so they must have
felt it to be pretty significant. When you talk to CM tech support you can
ask them that question and pass the answer on to us.

Q5) So your engine came with the P/N 653351-2 pump and you had it rebuilt in
the field (not at TCM factory) when it leaked previously?
If so, that was probably one of the data points that led to the creation of
CSB01-1.

Yes. I have also pondered that situation. I think that my engine was either
lying around the factory for some reason (defect?) or returned to the
factory from the field for some reason (defect?). Then when I specified the
unique configuration of my IO-240 B9B engine** the factory saw an
opportunity to cobble together my unique configuration engine and get rid of
the engine lying around.

**PS: I had studied in great detail the IO-240 XXX engine installations in
the Diamond DA20-C1 and Eagle airplanes and designed my engine like choosing
from a Chinese restaurant menu: 1 item from column A, 2 items from column B,
and so forth. I thought that TCM should designate my engine configuration as
the IO-240 OCB engine, but they went with the IO-240 B9B designation, the
next number in the configuration sequence. As far as I know my engine is the
only one made with that specific configuration.
I think that the IO-240 BXXB engine configuration numbers are now well up
into the teens (or maybe higher even). It would be interesting to get a
configuration matrix showing just exactly what configuration each engine has
by configuration number. That information was hard to come by even back when
I attended the TCM factory engine training course before ordering my engine.
