Subject: Electronic Ignition Power Description: Attached is a IntelliCAD drawing of how I am powering my dual electronic ignitions in my new RV-6A. The basic approach for this design was to keep the operational characterizes the same as that of a conventional magneto powered design.
My design utilizes two batteries for redundancy, with the Aux Battery driven by Bob's Low Voltage Monitor/Aux Batter Management Module. This circuit is implements an independent essential buss for the ignitions. I am using two Jeff Rose type electronic ignitions, with a standard Ignition switch that grounds the inductive pickup to the ignition modules, rather than switch the power to them. Other ignition switch configurations are certainly possible, I just like the use of a conventional ignition switch.
Some of the designs characteristics are:
1. Both electronic ignitions are powered during engine start.
2. During engine start, the Aux Battery contactor is forced off. Power to the ignitions will be provided by battery with the highest voltage. This eliminates the low voltage dip to the ignitions during engine start. (The AUX battery is NEVER used to power the starter..BUT, repositioning the AUX Battery contactor switch AFTER the Ignition Power Module, could give the pilot the choice of using the AUX battery during start...)
3. Once the engine develops oil pressure, the ignitions will always be powered directly from either battery, even if their respective contactors are shut off.
4. The engine is shut down by leaning the mixture, or turning off theignition switch (just like the process used in all the Spam Cans..).
Since I am building a full IFR aircraft, I've also inserted a filter (standard AC Line filter) into the power leads to the electronic ignitions. Hopefully, this will eliminate any conducted high frequency noise on the power buss...
Hope this sparks some other ideas...
