Subject:   Beech V35A with twin Browning Machine Guns
Description:

The photo shows a Beech V35A that was armed with twin .303 Browning Machine Guns for use in the Rhodesian Bush War in the late 1970's to early 1980's. The guns are not visible, other than the tips of the barrels sticking out of the pods under the wings, and anyone who knows a Bonanza will certainly recognise the addition of the pods under the wings.

The guns were fed by two 600 round trays that were recessed in the wings. The guns themselves were mounted on their sides, which allowed easy access to the breeches: spent cartridge cases were ejected out the side of the pods whilst the ammo belt clips fell inside the pods for subsequent re-use. The guns were fired by solenoids, activated by a PTT button on the control column. The sight was rudimentary, to say the least, for it was simply a simple ring sight that was locked into position: the second reference point was a mark on the windshield. Rudimentary it might have been, but it was very effective and very accurate at 200 yards.

The work was done by Matabele Air in Bulawayo, from plans that were obtained in the US. I believe the plans were from a T34 Mentor, which is supposed to have the same wing as the V35A? Not certain on that, though.

After the war the aircraft was reverted to its civilian state, and sold after my father passed away in 1990.

In the photo it shows a registration of VP-WHM, but after the country became Zimbabwe it was re-registered Z-WHM.
