Subject:   Low Cost, Light Weight Canopy Cover
Description:

Here is an idea for a low cost, light weight canopy cover. The material list is easy to find:

  • 70" Diameter Vinyl Table Cloth (76" would be even better) with flannel backing. Can be purchased at Linen - N - Things for $10
  • 25' of 1/8" Diameter Nylon Rope. Can be purchased at most hardware stores for around $5
  • 4 x 1/8" diameter bungy cords, 6"-12" long. Can be purchased at most hardware stores for around $5

  • The table cloth needs to be gathered and stitched in six places as shown in the diagram. No cutting is necessary.
  • The table cloth is rolled over in front, back and on both sides and sewn along a 14" section for the nylon rope to feed through.
  • The rope is knotted (to provide a rectangular shape) at the 4 corners to distribute the loads more evenly into the table cloth.
  • Finally the bungy cords are used to attach the nylon rope to the airframe. On my aircraft the steps and fresh air intakes made good attachment points.

This project cost me less than $20 and was only a few hours work to make. The material is light weight and folds up nicely in one of the wing lockers for the occasional overnight trip. Best Wishes on your projects. With perseverance, the finish line finally comes into sight!
