Subject:   Open Cockpit Zodiac
Description:

Hello Listers, here are some pictures of my heavily modified open cockpit tandem Zodiac. It is so modified that I don't call it a Zodiac any more, but the roots are obvious. The fuselage is basically an XL-structure, narrowed down to 70 cm and 50 cm longer, with the rear seat 30 cm back, and the front seat in the cg. The main spar and undercarriage are XL, just narrower, and in taildragger configuration. I built a beefed up vertical stabilizer, as with the open cockpit and my six feet four I wanted a certain amount of rollover protection. The wing has the XL span and profile, but it has a square planform, like the HD, as I moved the spar back by 12 cm and couldn't be bothered to build every rib a different size. As the empty weight is only 560 lb, I omitted the flaps, too.

Engine is a Verner 1400, about 80 hp.

First flight was today, 20th of January.

The thing that is pure Zodiac is the way she flies, she is a pleasant little plane, turns nicely, climbs well, and handles very straightforward during take off and landing. She is a bit more stable in pitch than a HD, due to the longer fuselage. I have taken her up to 90 knots, but that is way faster than I want to go on a regular basis, as it gets very breezy in the cockpit (almost blew my goggles away). Building time was 480 hours from cutting the first metal to first flight. The next one will be a standard HD taildragger again, to go places in the comfort of an enclosed cockpit. The 912 and prop already sit on my workbench...

Cheers from Australia,

Chris
