Subject: CH601 modifications Description: When I had about 80 hours on my 601 I had an incident wherein I was about to get airborne when one lathe let loose. The canopy almost ripped off and slammed into the right wing. The wind blew my headphones and glasses out of the plane! I got stopped and looked things over and decided that the canopy was going to have to be hooked up front. I ordered the drawings from Nick and studied them a while and then got the idea "it would be much easier to change it like this:" A few days later I had it done. Then while flying I decided to remove the side to side hooks and look for a clamp. I am using one from J&L Industrial Supply (1-800-521-9520) Part Number DCO-53310-B. DE-STA-CO OVER CENTER TOGGLE CLAMP #331. The two cost about $20. and are rated with a 700 lb. clamping force. The Al extrusion was 2 4' pieces of L angle 2" x 2" x 3/16" with most of one side cut off. This was from Wicks. The hold open is from Car Quest: 4731 Strong arm gas charged lift support. This one I chose because it had useable end fittings. Also, it is nice to have a leash to pull the canopy down. I used a dog leash. I now have a few extra holes in the airplane, but that happens with mods sometimes. 103.5 hours now. Cleone
