Subject:   Nice Straight Edge...
Description:

I have just started my third RV and came up with an idea that I wanted to share. I think that I have found an easier way to get a nice straight edge on the rudder and other parts that have a two sided dimpled trailing edge. First, I put the rudder on my work bench with the forward side down and supported it with braces so that the traiIing edge was up. The counter balance hangs down off the edge of the bench. I clecoed every other hole in the trailing edge with the tapered double dimpled edge support in between the sides. Then I clamped a length of aluminum angle to the trailing edge with side grip clecos just below the rivet line. Next I modified a rivet squeezer die by grinding it and polishing it at the same angle as the trailing edge. (see attached pictures) Then I put a side grip cleco on either side of the hole that I was working on to make sure that the sides were tight against the interior piece. I put a rivet into a hole and using a hand squeezer and lining up the tapered die with the angle of the rudder, I squeezed the rivet. (I have a mark filed into the die so that I know that it is at the correct angle.) This worked perfectly. The rivets set into the dimples on both sides in one step. I riveted every other hole and then removed the clecos and riveted the remaining holes. The whole job took about two hours and my trailing edge is as straight as a string. -Jim Cone, Three Peat Offender / RV-7A 17400
