Subject:   Tailcone baggage compartment
Description:

After seeing a RV baggage compartment photo somewhere on the net I decided I wanted one too. Here is the result. I started with a damaged 0.016 elevator skin, squeezed it in the tailcone, and started cutting to fit. A short (15"?) .020 skin is added at the aft end to reach the tail. Top edges were flanged to attach to the outer skin. The supports are 3/4 x .063 angles - (2) spanning half width at the baggage bulkhead, then one each full width at each aft bulkhead. The .016 material is pretty light and required 5/8 x .025 angles running down the middle of the 'floor'. Another angle was placed vertically at each bulkhead. The door was cut from the existing baggage bulkhead, and hinges and camlocks were added. The tiedown points are bolted to the supports. Total weight 3.3 Lbs. for all parts. Be wary of aft CG with this storage. I ran preliminary numbers and will probably placard for 20-30 Lbs max. (or about 2 pairs of skis & poles, a rifle, fishing poles, a long thingy, etc.). It will get painted light grey along with the cockpit. If I did it again I would use a .020 skin, not the .016 I had. Pictures should explain things a little better. Kelly
