Subject:   Remote Magnetometer Shelf and CPU Mount for Blue Mountain Avionics EFIS-One in RV-8
Description:

Dynon and BMA installers must decide where to place their magnetometers to avoid interference from ferrous metals (steel). In the RV-8, it was difficult, but not impossible to find locations in the airframe that would keep the magnetometers at least 24 inches away from steel, as was advised by Greg Richter at Blue Mountain.

The closest steel to our shelf location in the top aft fuselage is the canopy frame, which, when closed, is 24 inches forward of the shelf and the rudder cables, which are on the bottom of the fuselage floor about 24 inches straight down. The shelf is designed to be removeable by removing four 8-32 screws (stainless steel or brass) and is designed to be fine-levelled by using washers, if necessary, under one or more of the screw heads. Obviously, drilling the side attach angles in the proper position (level in the "level flight attitude") makes this easier. The canopy frame will probably cause interference with the mag headings in the open position, but since we don't plan to fly with the canopy open, this should not be a problem.

Since we will only need a DVD player once every 28 days to upload the subscription data base, we decided NOT to install the DVD player permanently to save weight. Instead, we will simply remove the access plate and plug in the power cord and serial cable to the left side of the CPU and pop in the disc. Once uploaded, we'll unplug and secure the access cover and go fly. The DVD receptacle on the CPU is right up front on the left side next to the access cover -- easy to reach. Access to the magnetometer shelf, while further aft in the fuselage, is simply a matter of removing the aft baggage bulkhead cover and finding a skinny person (me) to slide back there and work from below the shelf.

At press time, the elevator autopilot servo will be mounted aft of the elevator bellcrank (still at least 24 inches away from the mag shelf) and the aileron servo will be mounted in the right wing bay outboard of the aileron bellcrank. Since we have decided to upgrade our EFIS-Lite to also have mag heading, our second magnetometer will be placed on the same mag shelf, as there is plenty of room for two of them there. They will not interfere with each other, according to the engineers at BMA. Hope this helps anyone installing these components in an RV-8 or 4. Many thanks to Matt Dralle for maintaining this valuable builder resource.
