Subject: Off Field Landings Thread Description: This is my contribution to the thread about off field landings. I am including attachments of pictures of the Chicken Hawk before and after, my account of the incident, plus a newspaper article. The page of my account was written before, so the numbers next to the picture discriptions don't match exactly.
The newspaper article written by BJ Phillips, who used to be a reporter with the Philadelphia Inquirer, is essentially accurate, except she quoted a witness who estimated my AGL as 1,500', but Ed, who has an altimeter, said he was at 1,000' AGL and I was a couple of hundred feet higher, so 1,200' is probably closer. She also located the accident near Pottsville (Yuengling beer!) but it happened outside of Ottsville, just west of Doylestown, PA.
From all that went through my mind on the way down, I thought I was falling about 15 - 18 seconds, until later I spoke with a witness who was floating in his father-in-law's swimming pool directly beneath me as I turned said, "Naaa... you were rotating about 1 revolution a second.... about 7 to 8 seconds and you were down." That's how I figured my terminal velocity to be 100 - 110 mph.
When I learned how under-constructed the Chicken Hawk was, I did some prudent research and found out about Kolbs (which I hadn't heard of prior to) and bought my Ultrastar. Any readers flying Kolbs will not encounter the failure I did, but if you or anyone you know flys another brand of aircraft which uses marine push-pull cables with the adjustment rod at the end should make some changes before becoming airborne in it again!!
By the way, it still fascinates and amazes me to be alive.
