Lycosaur
From Matronics
Lycosaur is a portmanteau formed from the name Lycoming and the word dynosaur. It is a derogatory term used to refer to Lycoming engines, and specifically to their supposed outdated technology (usually, as compared to a contemporary automotive engine).
Some of the design features of Lycomings that may be considered outdated (by users of the term Lycosaur) are:
- carburetion (as opposed to fuel injection)
- pushrod-activated valves
- air cooling
- magneto ignition
- solid valve lifters
- camshaft splash oiling
Note that other RV builders will argue that there are specific advantages to many of these design features. It is by no means generally accepted that Lycomings are technologically out-of-date.
