      > The Kitfox 7 Super Sport has been for sale for the past couple of years... It
is a tail dragger or tricycle gear, whichever you choose with great STOL performance.
I talked to a guy that visited the factory in Idaho recently and he said
everything was great. He was so positively impressed with the John, the factory,
and the plane that he bought a Kitfox Super Sport kit and is now building
      it

Mike , I cannot say that a Super sport is a STOL aircraft as I have never flown one or see and video on one. If it is a STOL aircraft then Mc BEan should be shooting some video to help sell his airplane like this guy did http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=ct2fNFc8AxY

I will tell you that my videos Have in fact sold many pilots on the Kitfox and
in fact have helped sell many used Kitfoxes. Too bad the Model IV is not sold
new anymore as I think it would be a stellar seller as we already know if built
and flown right it is a stellar performer and would be close to a STOL aircraft.

Michel, Always interested in all aspects of Kitfoxes.
Any seal can wear a steel shaft from continual use. If you are showing signs of
seepage now it will only get worse. Shafts can wear from contaminants in the
oil as well as dirt, dust from the area of the seal. Crankcase pressure could
      force oil out as well.

      > I have a slight leak on my starboard distributor shaft seal. I got a new seal
but ... since I recently epoxy a new rotor in place, I don't feel in a hurry
to remove it in order to change the seal. But I am not sure I understand how it
can wear a groove on the shaft; it is a plastic seal, right?

I think I will do the same as you did since my situation is the same, I have PPL,
a lapsed medical and an aircraft that meets the LSA rules. I will certify as
experimental AB and fly as Light Sport. All will be legal.

And, thanks to all who responded to my initial question. No need to challenge the
      FAA guy now.

      Dick,

I got your picture. I see what you are talking about now. We are talking about
two different things; The leaf "springs" are the three pieces of steel that
link the fuselage to the tail-wheel assembly, not the connector/anti-shimmy springs
that connect to the rudder. The tabs I am going to reinforce are the ones
on the very end of the fuselage not the rudder. From the picture it actually
looks like you might have a reinforcement plate under the tabs as well (unpainted
metal between the tabs and the leaf springs).

| Subject: | Re: RE: Timing gear |

It is a flexible seal, made of...I dunno, neoprene or something like
that, and it definitely wore a groove in my shaft. Pictured is the
shaft, with the 2 grooves worn in by the seal, which you can see in
the distributor bottom plate...this is the part that the cap attaches
to. To change the seal, you need to remove the two socket-head cap
screws (also known as Allen bolts over here, after a company that
made them), then remove this plate and drive out the old seal and
press/drive in the new seal, and you're done...well, except for
      putting it back together.
      But...if you have a worn/grooved shaft like I did, I had to use a
product called Speedi-Sleeve (pictured), which is slid over the
shaft, becoming the new surface upon which the new seal rides. The
sleeve is only .011" thick, so it only increases the diameter of the
shaft by .022" or about half of a mm. This increase in diameter not
only provides a new seal surface, but it increases the tension of the
new seal so it seals better. Mine worked right up to when I took them
off when I dismantled my engine, and I'm thinking of putting them
back on. Now as to why these seals leak, and I'm afraid yours are
going to show worn shafts too, Michel, I'm thinking they don't have a
hard enough shaft to begin with. When/if you pull your bottom plate
(s), don't be alarmed about the sloppiness of the distributor shaft
if you pull the distributor shaft support tower (I call it that)...it
won't get out of time, because the gears will still be in mesh, just
loose until the tower/support goes back on. You can't screw anything
up by taking this area apart and changing the seals, or by installing
the speedi-sleeves. You cannot get the engine out of time. But if you
decide to change the distributor shafts themselves, you will have to
remove the gear case cover, and THAT'S where you can get into trouble
with ignition timing. I can get you through this if you get that far
into it, or so can your Jab dealer friend over there.

It's surprising to me how the soft seal can wear a groove into the
shaft, but here's living proof that it did. My left (port) one is
pictured. The right side leaked worse, but the shaft was unharmed by
the seal...go figure that one out!

      LIST,
As it has been said many times...

We continue to support ALL the Kitfox models back to the Model 1

Supporting the Model IV on up is a given and we can supply just about
everything.. and in fact are developing new items for the IV and newer
      models.

The Super Sport is available in both Tail Wheel and Tri Gear. Round and
      Smooth cowlings.

The Lite is a single seat ultra-light based on the 2SI engine to keep it in
the legal Ultra-light category. The 2SI is no longer available.

Also - will you or your partners be selling any of the other Kitfox model

Also will you be making parts available for models 1 to 6 Kitfoxes? Kitfox

Will you be offering a Super sport or another model that is a tail dragger
and with STOL performance like the Kitfox IV has given for the past man

The majority of attendants spend their days selling cigaretts, beer, and snacks...
They just happen to be running the credit cards for the gas pumps also.
The attendant probably knows far less about the gas in the pumps than we do....

Why would anyone take some minimum wage attendants word if the gas has ethanol
or not ? I would not even waste my time asking, just buy the test kit.

I agree with Dave though, I would use ethanol gasoline before I would put 100LL
in my Rotax 912-S. Carb floats, seals, etc are easy to inspect and replace
if needed, a Rotax 912 clogged with lead is much worse.

You are right, Dave, an oil leak won't repear itself as we do from e.g. the flu.
Mechanical faults only get worse with time.

Thank you for the detailed explanation, Lynn. I will replace that seal but ...
I must wait. You see, I had a operation and I still have the stiches. I am not
supposed to lift my left arm more than 90 degrees and ... as you know, there
isn't much room behind a Jabiru in a Kitfox. But I will get to it.

Incidentally, I just went flying a few touch and go, today, with my son as the
PIC. It was nice to be in the air again, even as a passenger.

Polyfiber epoxy primer is very good. 3M 2216, or Hysol are both very good
adhesives. The wing ribs are bonded using this with cotton flox.

I ran my 912S exclusively on AvGas and never had any trouble. I run
AvGas in my 4-stroke motorcycle, an old pre-emissions-controls
Plymouth, and in my lawnmowers and trimmers. They run cooler, can
sit long periods without the carbs getting gunked up, and I don't
have to worry about what's in it.

      Thanks Ellery

In Canada I could get this stuff, as Lynn says, within 24 hrs but here in
      Australia it's a different matter.

When you say laquer - do you mean automotive Duco thinner or is this
      something else?

Let me get this straight.....some of you guys are flying 912's in
airplanes, you fly into an airport, and you hope to have automobile
gas there for you? And with all the bad hype about ethanol, you'd

Lynn, you are right HYPE is the keyword on ethanol until it proven to me otherwise.
ANd I would rather not use ethanol gas but I have no choice.

912 can use AVGAS but not with synthetic oil. You will get more lead fouling
      as well.

Let me get this straight.....some of you guys are flying 912's in
airplanes, you fly into an airport, and you hope to have automobile
gas there for you? And with all the bad hype about ethanol, you'd
        rather use this than 100LL????

You can get "lacquer thinner" at most hardware stores, but like the
one poster said make sure of what it is (or something like that). I
don't know what that means except to be sure you read the label. I
figured that lacquer thinner was lacquer thinner, but maybe they are
not all created equally. Sorry I can't be more helpful, Gary. Maybe
you should just bite the bullet and get that one gallon that Aviaquip
offered. As far as my own experience is concerned, the stuff lasts
for a long time in the tightly-sealed can, so it won't go to waste.
The Polytone reducer is formulated for application in either cooler
or warmer temperatures, and comes in different part numbers depending
on the temperature of the air when it is applied.

A question: are you using the Polytone to paint your wheels pants? Is
that why you're looking for Polytone reducer? If so, that's the wrong
stuff to use on hard surfaces, I was told. I was just putting 2 and 2
together, and thought you might be painting your wheel pants...if
      not, I'll keep quiet. : )

When I use 100LL in my fox 912 I use TCP. And I use semi synthetic Valvoline
Durablend. I only use it when i do cross countries and Mo gas isn't

I work in the home improvement industry. (paint contractor) The Lacquer
thinner you buy at paint stores and Big box stores stinks less then the kind you

buy at automotive stores. It seems as the stuff at Auto stores or auto
refinish shops is stronger. Just my professional opinion. Steve Bennett

Lynn - you are dead right it is for the wheel pants. I have had pretty
good success in the past with polytone on Fibreglass (even though it's not
really recommended). I think the biggest problem is the bond and in the
past I have applied a light primer coat and while it's still "just" tacky
      I applied the Polytone.

      Best regards

| Subject: | 2 stroke oil - Pennzoil update |

Perhaps those folks currently flying 2 stroke Rotax engines already
      know this, but I didn't .
As I have read many times before, "Pennzoil 2 Cycle Oil for Air Cooled
Engines" has been the most reccomended oil for the (water cooled) 582
Rotax. I attended a seminar by Phillip Lockwood of Lockwood Aviation on
the basics of maintaining the Rotax 582 while at AirVenture. As many of
you may know Shell Oil purchased Pennzoil and has stopped making this
preferred 2 cycle oil. Mr. Lockwood said they purchased the entire stock
of this oil from Pennzoil and can supply that oil through the end of the
year. Lockwood Aviation has worked with AeroShell engineers to test
replacement formulations by test bed running several new 582 engines for
300 hours then inspecting each engine. He said they found a oil
formulation that equals the Pennzoil peformance and that will be
available from AeroShell by early next year.

      Hi all,

I thought I would try to give back to the list with this little movie. I'm still
trying to get used to this lighter, more sensitive aircraft. This takes place
      at
a local dry lake, El Mirage, here in the high desert of California. Edwards AFB
is just over some hills from it. It was already 100 degrees by the time I took
off and the lake bed is at around 3,000 ft., so the DA was over 5,000 ft.
I know when I was looking at and for a Kitfox, I really appreciated the videos
that some on this list had provided. On take off with full flaps, even on this
hot high day, was really short by Stinson and Cessna standards. I still haven't
worked out where the wheels are exactly on landing yet. Thanks for
      letting me post it.
