That's why I try to fly as much as I can.....the memories were starting to catch up to the dreams. I once thought it would be nice to touch down in all the 48 states (the ones that I don't have to kiss somebody's a- - to travel to), but I'm starting to think that Michigan needs my gas money more than the other states (my rationalization for staying home?), so maybe I should try for all the airports in Michigan....something like 500 if you count all the private, non-charted ones. Lynn, if it's any help, there is a guy named Steve Zell here in Michigan who made up a directory of private airstrips in Michigan. He spent a lot of time, gas, and long distance phone calls developing it and it's available from him at the address below. From the amount of work he has into it, I doubt he did it for the money. Just tell him I sent you. zelconsult@gmail.com Deke ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lynn Matteson" <lynnmatt@jps.net> Sent: Monday, March 16, 2009 6:21 AM Subject: Re: Kitfox-List: RE: Jeff Puls 1951-2009 > > That's why I try to fly as much as I can.....the memories were starting > to catch up to the dreams. Beat you to it, Deke....:) I bought one after he came to our EAA chapter meeting telling of his work to "build" the directory. I carry it with me in the plane. I've already landed at some of the private strips listed, including yours as you know...again sometime soon, I hope. I still wanna get over to Lost Creek...that sounds like a fun place to go to, but it'll have to be after the ground stabilizes. Went on the Tires Unlimited website and checked for Nanking smooth tires like I am running on my 4. They don't list them anymore and after calling he confirmed they don't have them. Anyone know who might have them? Or a similar tire. I like them and was looking for a spare. Dick Maddux Fox 4 Pensacola,Fl **************Feeling the pinch at the grocery store? Subject: Optimizing speed for range, endurance and practicalities...
The way I was told to find the best range was a practical one: First set up as straight and level cruise. Then reduce the rpm by 100 ( direct drive ) and note the corresponding drop in indicated airspeed. Continue with this until the drop in indicated airspeed takes a bit of a jump then increase your rpm by 100. Greatest endurance was also easy just keep reducing the throttle until you cannot maintain altitude then increase again 100 rpm. Slowest possible speed was found by attaining the greatest endurance then lifting the nose and applying power to maintain altitude. Continuing doing this until you either feel a stall coming on or are at full throttle. This manoeuvre should only be attempted at altitude. It is sometimes fun to see the ground going the wrong way if you are pointed into a nice stiff wind. Noel Loveys AME Intern, RPP Kitfox III-A, 912 almost ready to go. As near as I can tell, "Carson Speed" is something invented by one of the authors of an excellent article in the September 1993 Sport Aviation. For those that want to test, you can fly, say at your normal cruising alt. testing as stated below, every 100 rpm, or 2 or 300 on a geared engine, flying in all 4 directions reading the GPS and IAS, fuel flow (for those with that feature) and RPM. put this info in a table and why not in excel, make diagram over fuelflow / TAS and you get the miles per gallon ... Jan Ps you also get a calibration of air speed indicator if you have OAT meter to get your density alt. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Noel Loveys" <noelloveys@yahoo.ca> Sent: Monday, March 16, 2009 5:30 PM Subject: RE: Kitfox-List: Optimizing speed for range, endurance and practicalities... > > The way I was told to find the best range was a practical one: First set > up > as straight and level cruise. Subject: Lift over Drag
I'll apologize first for not having done a search first on this topic. But reading the fuel flow topic has me thinking about L/D=2C lift over drag. Which translates into best range/fuel economy=2C best climb rate and best g lide. Each of our aircraft will be slightly different=2C as drag factors(s treamlining)=2C wing length and weight will influence final numbers and its associated angle of attack=2C but there should be some similar numbers for each model (KF2=2C 3=2C 4=2C 5 etc). I am curious what those airspeed num bers are for those of you with different models. Most of the time we are t rying to get somewhere...quicker. But on rare occasion it may be necessary to get every mile possible from each drop of fuel. Lost Creek has the best "bar burger" that I've had. I thought that they were closed, but it would be great if they are still in business. Mio is where I bought my Kitfox. A friend of mine has a T-craft like mine at MIO and told me about the Kitfox. It is a nice place to stop to grab some chow. I am always impressed with their breakfasts. A group of us fly over there from Houghton Lake for breakfast a couple times a year. Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=234843#234843

Speed for best L/D is slightly lower then speed for best range, due to propeller efficiency and specific fuel consumption is little better with higher speed. Jan ----- Original Message ----- From: A H To: kitfox-list@matronics.com Sent: Monday, March 16, 2009 3:54 PM Subject: Kitfox-List: Lift over Drag I'll apologize first for not having done a search first on this topic. But reading the fuel flow topic has me thinking about L/D, lift over drag. Which translates into best range/fuel economy, best climb rate and best glide. Each of our aircraft will be slightly different, as drag factors(streamlining), wing length and weight will influence final numbers and its associated angle of attack, but there should be some similar numbers for each model (KF2, 3, 4, 5 etc). I am curious what those airspeed numbers are for those of you with different models. Most of the time we are trying to get somewhere...quicker. But on rare occasion it may be necessary to get every mile possible from each drop of fuel. Sounds like a plan, Marco. And with this Northstar F210, doggin' it is becoming fun, lookin' at the fuel usage numbers fall. Looks like about 80 statute miles from Evart to Lost Creek, eh? Maybe we could talk Pete Smith...he's at Home Acres (Y91), just north of you.... and his Peitenpol (sp?) into going along. he's the guy who told me he flies to Oshkosh over the water at 50- 100 feet AGL, because flying higher than that just "prolongs the agony" (if he has an engine out)...he's a fun guy! You remember him...he was parked to my left in 2007 at Oshkosh. It is used to mount a Garmin GPSMap 196, 296, 396, 495 or 496 handheld GPS unit in the dash panel. The GPS unit itself remains removable for portable use or security. Check it out at www.airgizmos.com This panel dock sells for $99.95. This one is in perfect condition and I will let it go for $50 plus postage. Please email me if interested. -------- Jim Feldmann, 3rd owner 1994 Kitfox IV Speedster / 912 Flying with a CFI Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=234876#234876

Hi Andrew- Here's what the later Kitfox (these are model IV) flaperons look like in that area. Maybe you could have your repairman/yourself build a similar "end rib" like this and pop rivet it into the end of the flaperon. It would require removing some of the existing pop rivets, and taking the bearing horn off temporarily, but that's no big deal. little 5 minute epoxy on the foam and a quick aluminum patch (like you had described) and your back in the air in under an hour. You can mix epoxy with micro balloons to make a nice fillet and you would never know on the end cap. -------- DO NOT ARCHIVE Leonard Perry aka SNAKE Soldotna AK Avid "C" / Mk IV 582 IVO IFA Full Lotus 1260 #1 snake oil salesman since 1-22-2009 hander outer of humorless darwin awards Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=234881#234881

Andrew, Now that I have seen the pictures, your discription was pretty good. This is what I would do: I would remove all the foam and "Micro". (Micro is Lancairs name for epoxy mixed with microballoons to form a very light weight "Bondo" like filler. Drill out the rivet and scuff sand the surface of the flaperon. Then fabricate the aluminum doubler and using a structural adhesive between the doubler and the flaperon Skin, rivet it in place using several 3/32 rivets around the periphery. Then re-rivet the doubler / skin to the spar. Essentially, I think that is what your A&P wants to do. When that is done, to close the end, bond some new foam into the inboard end with epoxy and micro it to shape. - again Lancair vernacular. Speaking of flaperon damage, I was putting my plane away last week, and got "just a bit outside" the 40-foot opening with my 29-foot plane...DUH!...and the ragged edge of the bi-fold hangar door sliced into the trailing edge of the flaperon, in the area between the two outer bearings. I'm going to have to repair that metal damage, which is about 1- 1/2" into the flap going forward of the trailing edge. I'm thinking this is a perfect opportunity to rig up a trim tab onto the flaperon to overcome the need to hold a little right aileron in order to fly with wings level. The trim tab could become the repair patch on, say, the top of the flaperon, and another patch could be added on the bottom, or vise versa. Any thoughts...comments? Comments - yes, wouldn't you correct a "heavy wing" problem with a wash adjustment? Certainly not a flaperon trim tab, one dumb-A to another. I also have that problem but learned how to fix it in Repairman's school (wash-in the heavy wing or wash-out the light wing), and it's on my just-do-it list right after installing the engine monitoring system. Oops, forgot all about that trick, Bob. The heavy wing thing seems to have just started recently, and I'm going to give it a chance to prove to me that it's something that isn't just a fluke before I tackle it. Thanks for the suggestion, Bob...and for recognition of my status as a dumb-A....I always knew I'd fit in somewhere! It's 60 degrees F, clear and sunny...I'm goin' flying. Lynn, This is terrible news, so I'm sorry to be the one to tell you. Pete passed away a week or so ago. He was in Florida, hanger flying with the guys at the seaplane school there, and had a heart attack and died right there. His great friend, Clyde, called me the day he died and told me. Clyde said that he was doing what he liked doing second best, hanger flying. His favorite thing was actually flying. He wouldn't have been able to fly the pietenpol this summer anyway. Clyde called me in January and said that Pete's hanger had caved in because of the heavy snow load, and crushed the pietnpol. He was re-building a Champ this winter in Tennessee before he went to Florida, and was expecting to go back to Home Acres in March or April. Sorry to pass on this bad news. Louie Champeau Model 3 912ul and '41 t-craft (bf-65) Houghton Lake, Mi (5y2) and Altus, Arkansas in the winter. I have a pair that I bought last year but can't find wheels to fit since I have the Cleveland wheels and brakes. I could let the two tires and two tubes go for $90 plus shipping. At first I didn't know which Pete you meant, then it hit me...Pete Smith! My God....what a shock....he had given me his location on the "south side of 27 in a double wide mobile home" and I had written it on my Michigan Aeronautical Chart which I have before me, planning the trip to Lost Creek. Jeez, what a shame. I never even got the chance to get up there and see him. Damn, I gotta start doing these thing before somebody else goes away, or I do! When Pete packed up for the trip home from Osh in 2007, he showed me how to prop a plane....I never had done this before....and then I walked the wing past a few tents until it seemed like he was clear of them all. But the "parking honcho" caught up with him out on the taxiway and flagged him down, telling him that he had brushed a tent, and he (the honcho) looked the wingtip over and declared it undamaged, and waved him away. That week was the first time I had met Pete, and the last time I saw Pete, complete with his leather flying helmet and goggles,(if I'm recalling the goggles correctly)...what a shame....well, I guess this is to be expected when I/we get to be this age. Thanks for letting me know, Louie. I seem to recall that the genuine Rotax thermostat has an internal by-pass in the event of diaphragm failure. You might want to look into this a little more closely. When I used to wrap my bungees it was a two man job. Inside the cabin I use a long screwdriver with the tip bent at 90 deg to reach down and pull up and stretch the bungee. The person underneath would assist. i could easily get 5 to 6 wraps with this method. Regards.
