Try it , you will be surprized. I don't like reaching out over that big hole to reach the handle on the bottom of the door ,so I have learned that if I am a bit gentle with the controls I can actually swing the door down quite gentley and grab the handle/latch at the bottom and lock it. Sorry if this is a repeat, but I didn't see it posted after two days..... Ok, Pat, I got my schedule worked out....I fly outta here on Thursday, 7-21-2010, and head for Mitchell, SD, to take part in the AirVenture Cup Race.....yeee--haaa! Then on Sunday, the 25th, we all...about 60 planes...head for Oshkosh. So I'll be in Oshkosh (hopefully) Sunday afternoon, and will probably stay for 4-5 days. I guess I'm the only Kitfox in the "race"....I put that in quotes because I won't be racing anybody but the fuel gauge in my plane, figuring I can make it easily on the on-board fuel, if I run LOP, and maybe even if I didn't. But I'm determined to make the distance...about 443 sm....to Snow Crest (this years' finish line) running just the way I always run it these days...LOP. So no Baraboo for me this year.... Vic- That stands for "lean of peak"(EGT), and it refers to running the fuel mixture setting so lean that the exhaust gas temperatures (EGT's) actually run cooler than they would at a normally-high-temp lean setting. You save fuel running this way, but don't produce as much power, and the engine will last longer running LOP, because the CHT's run cooler, and cooler (up to a point) is better. A lot of people don't believe this, but I've seen the results in my own engine, and heard of other reports that reflect better engine life. Ted- Pretty close...it's "lean OF peak". And just for the record, I've got a throttle-body injector, not a carb, but you're right...it's a setting of the fuel mixture that makes the engine use less fuel and allows cooler running, but make less power. It can only be used when you have a throttle setting of about 65-70% power. Vic- Bing does a fine job of "hands off" flying, but once you leave the ground with a particular fuel mixture....according to whatever jet and metering needle you have on board...that's about what you've got, and you can't change it on the fly like you can with a mixture- controllable throttle body injector (TBI), or other such fuel metering system. Lynn, Good luck in the race. Look for Red Hamilton. He has a white Tailwind. He averaged over 200 mph last year to win his class. That class is a hot class populated with RV's and the canard pushers. I would imagine he will be there this year. Last year he flew to Baraboo and then the race. Where does the race originate this year? It starts in Mitchell, South Dakota. Yes, I see Red Hamilton and another person listed in the Tailwind. There are 5 others in his class. I'm the lone plane in what they call the Sprint-LSA class, so I guess I've "won" my class already...*IF* I can get to Mitchell, and IF I can finish, that is. I've got a hunch there'll be others joining up for next years' race...I don't know why there aren't more LSA's this year.
