Subject: | Re: AirVenture Cup Race Winners |
Thanks, guys....
It was kind of a hollow "victory" as no one else entered the LSA
class. I guess when they heard that the (in)famous Lynn was entered,
flying a Kitfox with Jabiru power, they all figured it was a waste of
time trying to beat me.....at least that's the way I'll remember it. : )
The race itself was fun. The race officials let me start about two
hours early, because I told them I was going to be flying lean of
peak EGT, and that meant slow speeds...slower even than LSA's would
normally be. (I think they used an hour glass to time me) So while
others were still wiping the dew from their planes, I was taking off,
and the timers started my race time. It was pretty quiet on the
frequency until about 2-1/2 hours later when a chase plane called to
ask how I was doing. After that, a little bit of chatter between
planes, but for the most part, the frequency was quiet. Once in a
while someone would ask at what latitude someone was flying, but the
answer was often suspect, because I had heard that the racers often
lie to each other about what altitude they were flying just to lure
the other guy into a worse flying condition just to better their own
chances of winning the race.
I had discovered that I couldn't set my GPS to indicate the lat-longs
of just where the race ended, so I set it to a road intersection near
there. Then when I got near that intersection, I "quit navigating",
and set myself up at the correct latitude according to the GPS, and
continued to fly east until the proper longitude was coming up, then
I spotted the airfield with its' orange balls indicating the finish
line, and pushed in the mixture to full, the throttle to full and
poured on the coal. I probably crossed the finish line at 120 mph or
so. That was strictly for show, as the race is a timed race, and that
last little burst wouldn't have meant anything in the grand scheme of
things. Then I headed to Fond Du Lac for what was to be a gathering
of racers on the ground and, later , a flight of 50-some planes into
Oshkosh. That didn't happen, and we were told at the award
presentation (that night) that we would all fly into Oshkosh (on our
own) when they opened the field on Monday, which we did. When I
returned to Fond Du Lac that evening, I was too pooped to set up my
tent near my plane, so I just sat in the plane and slept (?)
overnight. If anybody has tried that in a model IV, stuffed with
camping gear in the co-pilot's seat, it ain't a pretty experience.
Yeah, Pat, I had the plane tied down at the race parking area, for
Mon and Tues, then moved it over to the Rotec display so I could show
off the TBI installation, and later moved it to HBC where I spent the
night, then got out of Oshkosh Thursday morning about 10 am...sorry I
missed you. I never got to see or meet Red....I just couldn't find
him or the plane!
It was a lot of fun, and I suspect that there'll be LOTS of racers in
this class next year. One guy I spoke with said that he tried to talk
some of his RV-12 friends into racing, but they heard about the speed
of the Kitfox with the Jabiru, and decided not to bother. : )
I think I will retire from racing while I'm the current LSA
Champion....."Retired undefeated" has a pretty good ring to it, eh? :)

Ever notice how just flip-flopping two letters in a word makes it a
very different word? I intended to say "altitude" and it came out
"latitude".....but most people would figure that out.
