Earl, My vote would be for lighter stick forces also. When flying more
precise movements and control are possible. Get in a J3 cub and you find

I have only a demo flight in the lightning, but if (when) I build my plan was to
figure out a a way to increase the forces in pitch - long wing tips or not.
I think I know what the mod looks like - I assume the counterbalance horn has gone
from full length, to half-length, and now to no horn at all.

Not sure I agree. I would imagine the margins are acceptable when loaded as designed.
The Osprey has rotor/prop blades which are designed to "broomstraw" if one must
land with the nacelles in the horizontal position.
The other idea which comes to mind is tempered glass. Very strong when loaded
as designed, very fragile when struck on edge.

I have limited flying experience but I have been racing cars before and operating
heavy machineries and cranes of all kinds and the response of the controls
is crucial in any precision task.
This is a very big improvement to me . To me it's 10 times more important than
stick forces. When I get my aircraft, it is one of the 5 most important criteria
I will check.
Can't wait to try it when I find time to finally go see it.

To all,
I'm in the process of updating and filling in the blanks
of my spreadsheet.
We're trying to list everyone's first flight and quite
honestly I don't always write them down when we do them here and
sometimes we don't hear about them until days or weeks after they
happen. Either way please send me the date of your first flight.
Also, the same goes for N-numbers. I have quite a few
but again I would like to fill in the blanks. Even reserved numbers
count!
I'd like to do this for as long as possible. It's nice
while we're a small community that we can have this type of contact with
our customers. Of course when we grow to the size of Van's it might be a
bit more difficult but I'll cross that bridge when I get there!!

Thanks Brian,
She just flew so well, so straight and a delight to fly. The guys at
Shelbyville are really onto a great little aircraft, I've never had so
much fun, I feel she will be a great little cruiser that will eat up
distance and not fuel.
Having some hot days here at present, low 90s, and doing a little more
work on CHTs on 3 & 5.

Does your airplane still have the complete aerodynamic elevator
counterbalance - the one that goes all the way forward to the leading edge of
the
stabilizer? If so, you will not have the very small "dead" spot in the pitch
control. If you have the modified aerodynamic counterbalance that only goes
forward of the hinge line but not all the way to the leading edge, then you
have just not noticed the very small "dead" spot. I doubt that anyone would
notice it if you did not fly lots of close formation unless you were just
looking for it. It is not a problem, but with the modified system the first very
small movement of the counterbalance does not really see any appreciable
airflow because initially it gets blocked by airflow over the leading edge of
what
use to be part of the original counterbalance. Confusing? I am having a
hard time describing with words something very simple to show you if we were
standing by the airplane. Anyway, Nick has once again come up with another way
to build your Lightning so you can "have it your way". You and I like light
stick forces, but the SLSA Lightning will need to meet ASTM standards, so
that is why Nick was looking for a more normal stick force per G feel.

Unless IVO has changed their blade design, I doubt that their props will be
as efficient as the Sensenich models that have been so successful on the
Lightning. The original IVO props were designed for the Rotax which of course
have a "gear down transmission" to reduce prop speed. The slower turning props
can use a longer diameter and narrow blades. It has been a while since I
took Aero 101, but I think the best propeller tip speed for efficiency is about
.75 mach. Since the Jabiru is a direct drive "airplane" engine, the prop
rpm is the same as engine rpm and you have a more "normal" looking prop and
blade profile that works best. Of course as everyone knows making propellers
is
part science and part black magic, so who really knows what will work best
on a specific airframe and engine combination until you try it. So glad the
Green Landing guys are trying it again.

What's the matter Tex, no muscles in your right arm? Yes the Cub is way
heavier than the Lightning, but you haven't felt heavy until you try to fly a
Saratoga in a missing man formation fly by. I had to borrow a Saratoga last
week for a "missing lady" formation fly by. My airplane was at another airport
and weather had kept me from changing out airplanes, and there was no way
the Cub was going to keep up with a Cirrus and two other fast homebuilts.
Anyway, the Saratoga was like a truck - a large dump truck. My Cub really felt
light after that flight. But hey, everyone said the formation looked great -
so you make do with what you have to work with.

My N number is 19-5301, I am in Australia we have two types of rego,
light sport aircraft that are amateur built have a 19-???? (eg 19-5301),
factory built and are certified are 24-???? (My Jabiru 24-4497), or
General Aviation VH-???? With experimental written on them.
