I got my horizontal stabilizer laid out this weekend. I bought a new router table
and destroyed a few pieces of nice wood trying to get the rabbet cut into
the beams. I finally got some results I am happy with.
I am also slowly making progress on my wing ribs. I have 8 made.

A place to build is one thing, a place(s) to store is another. I do all of
my building in my shop and store whatever items are complete, or otherwise
in the way, throughout the rest of the house.- Completed wings are in the
garage , tail pieces are in the basement, along with the wing struts and t
he center section is in our bed room. I keep the completed fuselage in the
shop because that is the item I am picking away at with all the little thin
gs still to do.
Regardless of where you end up, solutions will present themselves as you ge
t settled in and you will find clever ways to continue on.

I just pulled the tail off the plane and moved my fuselage into my one car garage
from my hangar. The hangar is 35 minutes away, So I can get a lot more done
in my garage. Having said that, I am going to have to do a lot of reorganizing
to get some work room in the garage. What seemed a resonable setup before is
now far too tight and cluttered.
I do have the ability to set up a shade canopy and tables out front and do some
work outside. I can also move some items to a small storage area.
Wings and tail will stay at the airport. The plan is to finish the fuselage, bring
in the tail in, paint it and attach it. Then I will take the fuse and tail
feathers back out and bring in the wings. Final assembly will be done at the
airport.
Then I will figure out how to keep two planes in a one plane hangar. Motorcycle
jacks and such may be involved in the answer.
A bigger battle is clearing my Personal schedule. The wife and kids are supporting
the Pietenpol fix. They often help on little tasks. I have decided to pickle
my Vtail Bonanza until the Piet flys. That means no flying for me.
I will then get recurrent in a tail dragger and will get the Pietenpol up and flying.
Then I can concentrate on some long term projects I want to do on my Bonanza and
getting an annual inspection.
At that point, I will have a pretty full stable. A fun, cheap, low and slow plane
to fly often, and a cross country machine that carries 4.
Blue Skies,
Steve D.

At this point, my plans are:
Riblett 612 airfoil. Don't ask why [Twisted Evil] It just seemed like a good
idea at the time.
Corvair Engine, Make the fuselage 2 inches wider, maybe add the front cockpit door.
Otherwise, pretty standard.
( I know, it's not standard.)

Subject: | Question about hardware |
I am about to start having to buy screws and nuts for my project. For a few years,
I planned to build a RV, and the thing I heard over and over was to only
use aviation grade hardware - nothing from Home Depot.
Now, I want to ask you guys what you have used. For example, I have the Vi Kapler
hinges, and in trying to learn what kind of screws to use, I just read a thread
where people were using SS screws from the local hardware store. Is that
what most people do? [Question]

I used all AC hardware. If you feel safe flying at 1000 ft with hardware store
screws and bolts .... go for it. I would not.

Great Joe; no criticism here. Riblett 613.5, 2 inch wider, front door. Even if
the 612 performs the same as original wing, if you decide to stretch a bit, at
least you'll have the piece of mind of doing it with a taller spar. More fuel
in center section wing too (if going that route). Do you work for one of the
airlines?

Joe, the machine screws that fit the Vi Kapler are a fairly special size.
Size 8 and (if my memory is correct) 100 degree bevel on the heads. I
bought mine through Aircraft Spruce. I suppose hardware stores might carry
that type of screw, but I doubt it. And you'd always wonder if the
fasteners were good enough. Placing an order through ACS with lots of sizes
of AN3 and some AN4, along with some of the specialty items was what I did.

ACS also has the hardware "kits" that have many common sizes and even
come with a little shelf case for a reasonable price. Joe, if you are in
Atlanta you can probably drive to ACS East and get hardware easily.

I am building my Pietenpol in two, one-car garages that are separated by a partition
wall. I just submitted an article for the BPA Newsletter last week. The
article is intended to show some of the ways I get the most out of a small shop.
Out of respect for the Doc, you'll have to wait until he publishes the article
(otherwise I would have submitted the info here.....) It's not anything secret,
I just strive to have an organized/pleasant place to build. It's great to
see the workshops/places you all use to build your creations...........

When I purchased a framed up Piet fuselage in the middle of winter I just w
rapped it in Saran wrap secured with a little duct tape. I drove it from C
oncord, NC
to Cleveland Ohio in some snowy weather with road salt and slush all over t
he place and all arrived nice and dry. (it did act as a weather vane in c
rosswinds
Ken-I know that uneasy feeling!)

AN hardware in my experience more expensive than hardware store

Subject: | Re: Question about hardware |
HI Joe,
Vi Kaplers hinges are cast for 100 degree aircraft hardware. Machine screws
like this are available from Aircraft Spruce and Specialty. The hinges the
mselves are not certified aircraft parts but have a long history of good pe
rformance without failure. In most cases it does make sense to use aircraft
hardware and it really isn't that much more expensive to know you won't tw
ict off the screw/bolt head if you tighten with both torque values and comm
on sense.
My bias.
Cheers,
Jim B.

Subject: | Re: moving a Piet fuselage--Saran wrap style |
Here's a picture of the Pietenpol fuselage we (Dick Navrotil, Skip Gadd, Ben Charvet,
myself and others) built this last April at Sun n Fun ready for transport
to its new owner in South Carolina. I LOVE duck tape, especially the 200 mph
variety. It was surprisingly stable considering the amount of area ahead of
the front support and, like the finished aircraft, just a bit draggy.

Subject: | Re: How many of you are building/have built in your 2 |
car garage
I was at Jake's aircraft factory last weekend (he put me to work cleaning it up
for the photos to go along with the article!), and it is amazing how much he
gets done in two single car garages! He has taken the concept of organizing your
workspace to a whole new level. Nicely done.
He shows that you can build in smaller spaces than you think.

Subject: | Re: Progress this Weekend |
Yes thanks: to date, woodwork only completed all ribs, and all tail feathers. Been
working on center section past few months. Putting finishing touches on it
now. All center section steel work is complete and after the Leading edge ply
I think I can call it complete with the exception of the fuel tank. I'll give
one more college try gas welding aluminum, but I can't get the the consistency
I want. Probably do the tank in 6 months after saving for a tig.

We are ok... heard from Jim on Facebook earlier today. Had a tornado on the ground
about 20 miles north of here this afternoon, but just a garden variety thunderstorm
at the moment.
Steve Ruse is near Norman/OKC area... haven't seen a post from him today. I imagine
they are busy down there.

Just saw a post from Steve's wife, Brittney... she says they are ok too. Listening
to the news and they are saying 51 dead... 20 are children. Official on
the phone says that there are 40 more deceased being brought in... no count on
children or adults... and they expect the number to continue to rise. By far
the worst tornado event in OK history.
