| Subject: | Report: West Coast Pietenpol Gathering 2015 |

When I arrived (by car again, sigh) early Saturday morning it was foggy and
cold at Frazier Lake airport so I drove back over the hill into the sunshine
at Los Banos thinking I would find Gary Boothe waiting for the fog to clear.
Sure enough as I pulled into the parking lot at the airport there he was
(Picture 1). What you can't see in the picture were the four RV-somethings
parked near him. As each pilot walked out to his plane they stopped to look
and take pictures of Gary's plane. I'm guessing they were all wishing they
could fly something as cool as a Pietenpol. After a bit Gary received his
launch orders (Picture 2) from his forward observer, Scott Liefeld, who was
at Frazier Lake manning the forward observation trailer. So our intrepid
aviator donned his flight gear and launched in the sky blue (Picture 3). Now
you should know that for two years Gary has been trying to get his plane to
Frazier Lake but both times something has prevented him from making it. But
not this year, he finally made it! (Picture 4). His plane was a great
addition to the lineup that also featured Charley Miller's and Mike and Vic
Groah's plane (Picture 5). Picture 6 shows how nice Gary's plane looks in a
more appropriate Pietenpol setting than the typical California asphalt that
he typically flies from. Just before sunset the wind died down and Gary and
Mike went flying (Picture 7) Mike's smoke system sure makes a lot of smoke.

Some videos of the two flying (yes I should have gotten closer)

It was a smaller than normal turnout in planes but that might have been due
to the AM fog and afternoon wind (and some rain around other parts of
California). Regardless we all had a good time meeting old and new friends
and making up excuses for why we are still not done building our own
Pietenpol (ok maybe it was just me doing that last part).

Thanks again to Charley Miller and his wife, and to Mike Groah, his wife,
daughter, father and mother for putting together another great West Coast
gathering. Hopefully we will see some of you in 2016.

Was it Dick who attached a file with float plans to a post some time back?
I printed that out and put in my cubicle. Look at it every day. I purchased
plans for a skin on frame kayak. The bulkheads are similar. I am almost
      ready to skin it.
Does anyone know the material the floats are made of? Assume marine ply
      bulkheads. How thick?
Would be a great tribute to put a Piet on those floats!

What a great report on your West Coast Gathering Chris Tracy and the photos
       and videos were excellent!

Way to go Gary in making that milestone trip after two years. I can only i
magine how GOOD it felt after you landed at Frazier Lake
when you were taxiing in. From past experience I would say that you slept
       like a rock that evening.

Gosh I enjoyed that guy. Blessings to his family and close friends.

One day at Brodhead Dick told me he used to own a twin Seneca (or something
like that) for his swimming pool business and he gave me some

of the harrowing details of a solid IFR flight one time. You could tell h
e was grateful to be on the other side of that flight-----even years later.
         Here's

to you Dick for making this side of our earthly life more of a joy.

Terry, I let the students handle the email list most of the time. Sorry if there
was no response. They moved the wing back 3.5 inches and made new struts for
the front of the cabana. Only three days left to school year and it is very
busy. Thank you for the response. The aircraft is now in cg when the fuel tank
is empty. September we will be back to work. Thank you.

I spent a few moments getting to know Dick at Corvair College last year (2014).
I helped him check and correct the backlash in his Corvair engine. I believe
this one was destined for his Piet on floats. He was a very nice man.

Thank you Jack, I had wondered how many folks did this as well. Dick was a really
nice person and he always made a difference at Sun N Fun. There will always
be memories of him in the workshops area.

Well said. There is no telling how many lives
      Dick touched, and how many
people decided that they too could build an airplane

Dick was simply one of the finest humans I ever met. There just aren't words that
can describe that man's generosity. The simple act of buying an airplane
from him changed so much in my life.

My thoughts and prayers are certainly with Joan and his children.

Marcus; I honestly don't even remember if Dick returned my Muktuk float plans to
me or not, but I'll check the hangar next time I'm there. The floats are made
of plywood but I don't remember the material callout and thickness. I believe
it was all metric thickness marine grade.

I, too, am building skin-on-frame kayaks from plans... a pair of Dave Gentry's Chuckanut 12s. I got the frames all cut out and all the stringer material ripped last fall, but then I got too busy to continue so kayak #1 sits as a keel on the strongback on a pair of sawhorses, stations marked, and a set of frames just clamped in place. A few photos on my website at http://flysquirrel.net/boats/framing.html if you're interested.

Don't take this wrong, Flyboy, as it's not a critique of your students,
necessarily, but just a comment in general, and applies to many adults,
      too...

Much of my work is accomplished through email, and I am continually
irritated by people (my grandson included), who do not respond to
constructive/instructive emails...at all! Just seems like bad manners...but,
then, maybe I'm just getting old...

Terry, I let the students handle the email list most of the time. Sorry if
there was no response. They moved the wing back 3.5 inches and made new
struts for the front of the cabana. Only three days left to school year and
it is very busy. Thank you for the response. The aircraft is now in cg when
the fuel tank is empty. September we will be back to work. Thank you.

Oscar, what do you do with your free time? You restored the Pietenpol, are
building a flying squirrel, a kayak, making hinges for Pietenpols, and i
vaguely remember you saying you had a job.

I have trouble just finding enough time to work on my pietenpol after work,
honeydos time with kids and grand kids.

Since April I have been recovering from rotator cuff surgery and have
accomplished little since then. It took 3 hours to do 20 min of putting
in cotter keys. The lack of progress is killing my soul.

      Mr. FlyBoy,

You said that you have been on the forum off and on, so you may have said it earlier
in a post, but I just wanted to get a better understanding of what you are
      doing and your goals-

      1. What are you trying to accomplish with your students? What are your goals?

      2. When do you anticipate finishing? What are you going to do with the aircraft
      once it is finished?

      3. Who is going to fly off the test phase, or is that not the goal? I believe you
said that you were not a pilot?

      4. How have you funded the project?

I will thank you in advance for your responses.

(Picture 1). What you can=99t see in the picture were the four RV-som

Gary received his launch orders (Picture 2) from his forward observer, Scot
t Liefeld, who was at Frazier Lake manning the forward observation trailer.
So our intrepid aviator donned his flight gear and launched in the sky blue
(Picture 3). Now you should know that for two years Gary has been trying to
get his plane to Frazier Lake but both times something has prevented him fr
om making it. But not this year, he finally made it! (Picture 4). His plane
was a great addition to the lineup that also featured Charley Miller=99
s and Mike and Vic Groah=99s plane (Picture 5). Picture 6 shows how ni
ce Gary=99s plane looks in a more appropriate Pietenpol setting than t

Hello, new to group. I'm looking for information regarding the whereabouts of a
highly modified Piet registered N13708. It was built by Meryl Neyman back in
the late 70's / early 80's and has been thru a few owners since. Last owner I
could find stated that it was sold to someone in Texas sometime around 2003. A
NTSB report states that it was damaged in an off-airport landing in Lometa, TX
in January 2006. From there, the "trail goes cold" as they say in the movies.
If you can share any info, it's appreciated. Thanks.
