What is this snow stuff ? Don't laugh though. My pool "freeze
protection" just started the pumps. It is only 7 pm here. My plants look
like they were nuked with roundup in the night. No brass monkeys hanging

Oh, and Matco sold me a brake upgrade because the originals were
designed for ultra lights at 600 lbs gross as I recall. The upgrade let
me easily hold the plane with full power. I ruined two sets of pads in
about 30 hours on the first set of brakes.

Okay, original Matcos were much better, not mush, and it is first

I have flown 800 hours on a 582 with the band brakes and the 5
inch lamb tires. The tires were cheap($12 each) but lasted less than 6
months. When I converted to the Jabiru, I changed the tires to Michelin
5X5. I decided I wanted more stopping power and opted for the Tracy
brakes, which were marginally better but still subject to fade if they
got hot. I next tried a set of original Matcos that were shipped with
the 912 Pulsar. They provided mush better stopping power, but still, not
what I wanted. I talked with Matco, at Oshkosh, and they had replaced
the orignal wheel calibers with larger ones and recommended I buy those.
I did, and they work. I can now do full power run ups and hold the
aircraft with the brakes.
Now, the down side, I am not sure how much additional heat I am
generating when I do those 60 MPH finals, land on the numbers, and make
the first tire off. But, I have been able to leave skid marks, so the
brakes are working great. Excess heat will melt a fiberglass gear leg,
not a good thing, so I try to be very careful with the brakes, but it is
nice to know, I can stop quickly, if needed, and not have brake fade.
One other thing, I try to hold the nose off when applying the
brakes, to avoid undue stress on it.
So my recommendation, Matco. They know the Pulsar and are eager
to work with you and are very helpful. I would not use any other kind.
My next plane will have Matco brakes, in fact, already bought the whole
setup, including tires, from Matco.

Here are the options I am very aware of. First the most
popular Matco WHLW50CC.75 wheel and internal caliper with WHLAXLE7 axle.
The other option I have found which would use my current AZUSA 5"
wheels is the Great Plains brake kit

anybody that has used this system. I also called Tracy Obrien about his
C90 brakes which also works with the AZUSA 5" wheels, but he did not
have any in stock and seemed reluctant to commit to an order.

I do not agree with Jerry.- My Azuzu drum brakes (using Sonex heavy wall
machined drum)-do provide predictable braking with fade.- They will not
save my but in a situation like a runway incursion where hard braking is r
equired to prevent disaster.- As for improving existing mechanical brakes
.- The early primitive automobiles went through a phase where increased m
echanical leverage was attempted via longer actuating arms.....all to no av
ail as engine horse power was increasing along-with better road surfaces
and increased-speed capabilities.
