Do you have an idea what caused the old oil cooler to fail? Subject: RESOLVED: Searching for Earl's oil cooler
Yes, I do. The forward hose from the cooler runs back to the oil tank which on my plane is mounted on the pilot side firewall engine truss mount. That 20" hose had the ability to possibly vibrate and/or exert an aft pull on the fitting where it attached to the cooler which likely contributed to metal fatigue. See this picture for "a picture is worth a thousand words." http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL17/102601/8658173/398104735.jpg I will create some type of bracket with an Adel clamp to support the hose at its midpoint and tie it in solidly with one of the intake manifold bolts. _____ From: owner-pulsar-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-pulsar-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of Cowan, Michael Sent: Monday, August 15, 2011 8:53 AM Subject: RE: EXTERNAL: Pulsar-List: RESOLVED: Searching for Earl's oil cooler Do you have an idea what caused the old oil cooler to fail? Subject: Pulsar reunion 2011
Good afternoon. We finally got home from Oshkosh today. We took full advantage of the cooler weather and spent an extra two weeks in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Ohio. Got home to a mail box full of reservations. We have thirty people registered and 11 Pulsars flying in. It is going to be a great party. Alan Gill contacted me with some bad news, his wife has to go in for surgery so they have canceled their trip to North America. They send their regrets and hope to make it next year. I continue to collect things for the reunion. Reverend Krohn sends his regrets but enclosed a package of material, old news letters and pictures. Steve Dunham has sent some miscellaneous parts to sell and I have boxes of pictures and parts from Paul Drone. Please bring any parts you want to sell, one builder is flying in his Jabiru powered Pulsar with a for sale sign on it. He hopes to fly home commercial, so if you are in the market for a GREAT Pulsar, you should bring your check book. By the way, I am looking for a 912 or 912S to power our new bird, so if you have one or know of one for sale, please let me know. If you have not sent in your reservation yet, please get it to me ASAP. Also, if you plan to stay at the Holiday Inn Express, please call them and make your reservation before they release the room block. If you have any questions please contact me at 210-639-5764. I am looking forward to seeing everyone. Greg Smith

I found a gentleman with available hangar space in Searcy, AR who offered to keep the plane there and gave us full use of the facilities, tools and even his pickup. Thanks again to all who offered to assist and again to John for parting with the piece I needed. Looks like I'll be back in the air in a few days. Jim ________________________________ From: owner-pulsar-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-pulsar-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of pilot623 Sent: Saturday, August 06, 2011 1:07 PM Subject: Pulsar-List: Searching for Earl's oil cooler I had to abandon my plane in Searcy, AR and drive home because we could not repair the oil cooler after the "welder" destroyed it. We tried bypassing the cooler but oil temps ran too high on a short test flight even at a very light power setting (it was 111 degrees outside!). Thanks to several of you who responded to my pleas for help. I'm looking for an Earl's 61002 (dimensions below) which is apparently no longer in production. If you have that cooler and would be willing to part with it (permanently), please let me know. Next steps include contacting Earl's to see if they know if any of their distributors or resellers have one on the shelf. Failing there, it looks like their # 210 00 could be adapted to work with a 2.5" mounting extension, though the cooling area would be only 61.5% of the original one. Thanks again for all offers of assistance. Hey Pulsar owners Ran into a guy today who worked on my plane before I bought it and h told me I had a fuel problem. Seems one of the vent lines was blocked They tried to poke through as far as they could but couldn't get to the blockage. So... Now what? He seemed to think putting in a new vent was better than ripping open the wing - I agree! What about a vented fuel cap? Thoughts? Suggestions? Have you already tried clearing the-line with-high air pressure...like 80-100 lbs?- Depending on the location of your fuel filler cap,-the ope ning may be opposite and close to where the vent line enters the top of you r fuel tank.- If need be, I can with the aid of an inspection mirror, - reverse feed a small diameter stiff wire through-a wing fuel filler openi ng into the vent line on my XP.- Hopefully your blockage is not in one of the 90 degree bends near the wing tip.- You may very well have an insect that has swelled after contact with fuel and is creating a rigid blockage. - I would go to the trouble of making an adapter to insert through the wi ng fuel filler where the pointed tip could be held firmly on the end of the vent tube and high pressure air be applied to blow back through the line. - Good luck. Thanks Dave... I'm not sure how they tried to release the blockage. All he said was they tried to reach it but came up against a wall. Whether that was a bend in the line or the actual blockage I don't know, and I take it they pushed from the outside in. I've had a mud dauber block up my pito tube on my cessna. Pain in the but! I take it you've had a similar experience. I'm going to get a mirror and see what I can see inside the tank. Wouldn't all the vent lines be in the same place? Thanks Chris Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=349581#349581

Just a suggestion but I once cleared a fuel vent on a Pulsar using a guitar string. Those are very flexible and made it through the bends that went into the fuselage tank. I pushed while turning it by hand and it cleared out a plug that was restricting the vent inside the tank. I think that I also modified the end of the string so that it had a slight cutting edge to it. Larry Eubanks

Once you have the blockage cleared a neat trick to stop it happening again is to use a split pin slightly smaller than the vent tube - just put a small kink in one side of the pin so that it stays in the vent tube. Put a ribbon on it to remind you to remove before flight but if you do forget air can still get past the pin so you won't collapse your tank. Stops any insects from getting and also does not create "bad" things from happening if you forget. I use that method and works just fine. As far as getting the blockage out try getting some very small flexible cable from a hardware place and feed in while turning. cheers Kym Australia On 16/08/2011, at 1:14 PM, Larry Eubanks wrote: > > Just a suggestion but I once cleared a fuel vent on a Pulsar using a guitar string.
