Went out to the hanger yesterday to install new main tires and noticed both tanks had started leaking. One was leaking pretty bad and the other was no ticeable. The ironic thing is the gas ran down the gear legs and puddled un der the tires and ruined the tires that were already shot. Thank goodness i t didn't happen after I put the new tires on. Anyway, I thought this might be a result of the extreme temps we had over t he weekend (107 plus and maybe 140+ in the hanger). I inderstand that most people replaced the sealant after about five years and it's been six for me . Does anyone know which sealant is best to use? I know AircraftSpruce sell s a Polysulfide sealant in a 3.5 ounce tube.=C2-Are there any new product s that work any better? I haven't taken the wings off yet but was wondering if there are any other things I should look for in terms of what caused this leak other than seala nt failure? It appear s to be comming from the endcaps at this point. Thanks, Barry Norman

You bet. All should see the correction for the tanks. In a message dated 7/5/2012 1:52:00 P.M. I inderstand that most people replaced the sealant after about five years and it's been six for me. Does anyone know which sealant is best to use? I know AircraftSpruce sells a Polysulfide sealant in a 3.5 ounce tube. Are there any new products that work any better? I haven't taken the wings off yet but was wondering if there are any other things I should look for in terms of what caused this leak other than sealant failure? It appears to be comming from the endcaps at this point. Subject: Re: What Paint Product Did You Use?
I have used acrylic urethane for both Cars and planes and it works very well. Fairly easy to apply and repair if damaged. Minor scrapes can be buffed out, some chips can be repaired with a brush and color sanded to new. The Imron is more for a professional to apply (dangerous stuff)but is extremely tough and a little more expensive. However if if you bang your plane hard enough to damage the paint you will probably dent the fuselage anyway. My recommendation for do it your self painting is the acrylic urethane with the clear built in. PPG Concept is on my current Pulsar, Spies Hecker was used on the first and it was good but expensive. Most brands are pretty good but it's really the painter and lot's of hard work that makes them look great. Pulsar Builders, I have a general question for those that painted their Pulsar themselves or those that had it done for them but know the product that was used. What paint finish product did you use? And, were you happy with the results or would you use something different if you had to do it all over again? Thanks in advance to your responses. Ron

Do not use structural adhesive on the fuel tank. The structural adhesive I tested dissolves in fuel with ethanol. Two things will happen, the adhesive in solution will get to your filters and carbs and could partiall y or fully block fuel flow. And, your tank will leak. None of that is good. I can tell exactly what you did from the pictures. That was a great help. Do you think I could use structure adhesive mixed with flox instead of the epoxy? I believe Greg is right on this one. I had to repair my fuselage tank due to the structural adhesive simply disappearing. The shape of it was still there under the sealer but the adhesive was gone. The strange thing is I had used very little fuel with ethanol in it. I agree with Greg also. I never knowingly used ethanol but structural adhesive just turned to powder around filler neck and outlet line. I had to repair my fuselage tank due to the structural adhesive simply disappearing. The shape of it was still there under the sealer but the adhesive was gone. The strange thing is I had used very little fuel with ethanol in it. The structural adhesive I tested dissolves in fuel with ethanol. Two things will happen, the adhesive in solution will get to your filters and carbs and could partially or fully block fuel flow. And, your tank will leak. None of that is good. I can tell exactly what you did from the pictures. That was a great help. Do you think I could use structure adhesive mixed with flox instead of the epoxy? The structural adhesive is very strong and I have plenty of it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- - From: "Jim Fillman" <pilot623@gmail.com> To: pulsar-list@matronics.com Sent: Thursday, July 5, 2012 2:50:54 PM Subject: Re: Pulsar-List: Tanks leaking Barry, I have lots of information to give about the fix described by Mark Brown after he saw the problem I had with my tanks. Barry, I do not remember what structural adhesive I tested, just know the results. I would suggest you do some test on your adhesive to make sure. I do know that adhesive manufactures have changed over the years so could very well be a different product. Can you still buy Hysol? In a message dated 7/5/2012 7:46:27 P.M.
