I am aware of the Grove gear. We have a few Pulsars flying with it. I just do not believe it is the best option for the Pulsar and prefer the glass gear. I plan to talk about this at the Pulsar reunion this year, as well a s the nose gear. Greg In a message dated 4/12/2013 10:22:09 P.M. This is exactly what I may have to do, although I am not thrilled with the idea of cutting the bottom out of the plane to remove the gear. The upper portion of the gear is in good shape and the attach points are solid with no sign of delaminating on the gear tabs, which is a good testimony to the strength of the design. Greg, I have had a crack going about six inches up my left gear now for about nine years. It has never gone any farther up. My theory is that the landing gear face plate keeps it from spreading. No blood,,, no fowl ! ! Knock Wood ! ! ! ! At some point before my kit #390 Aero Designs told me that they had strengthened the original composite gear. I think they said they had gone from a foam core to a solit core. I was told that to test the strengthen gear they had pressed it down flat and that it didn't break but it didn't come all the way back to its original shape either. ((( I took this all with a grain of salt. ))) What is the core material of the one you have ? ? ? ? From: Bob Hartunian <bobh5@earthlink.net>
Regarding gear repair from Palmer- If fractures were confined to only the resin between fibers, you could theoretically inject resin and repair gear. But cracking of structure normally involves fracturing of internal fibers which can not be repaired by resin. Once a fracture is started, subsequent loading will propagate it along the path of least resistance which is the resin/fiber interface. Repairing such a part might be possible by adding sufficient external plies to carry loading and bypass the damage of original leg. This would increase weight and without high quality inspection equipment, you are never sure if the repair came out as intended. Does anyone have a cracked gear I can use as a plug for the mold? If not, does anyone have a gear I can borrow long enough to make the mold? Once I have the mold, I will be able to make gears for anyone that needs one. I am suspecting it is the solid gear. I think it can be repaired with several layers of 45 degree carbon. Your situation is encouraging. Thanks Greg In a message dated 4/13/2013 10:56:20 A.M. ? ? ? The upper portion of the gear is in good shape and the attach points are solid with no sign of delaminating on the gear tabs, which is a good testimony to the strength of the design. This may be repaired with 45 degree wraps of carbon fiber but I want a way to replace glass gears in the future. I am a firm believer in the glass gear for the Pulsar. I plan to talk about this at the Pulsar reunion. Greg In a message dated 4/12/2013 6:35:43 P.M. What is the glass makeup you would use on the new gear. Thanks in advance for any input.
