Subject: | Bad Rotax 582 Stator Coil Removed |
I cannot imagine a Stator causing any damage. As for the connections and not
being able to examine them, can you repair them. Heat, vibration, and
overzealous use of plastic ties can put pressure on connections. The use of
shrink tubing can cause similiar issues. Use a magnyfying glass to look for
hairline cracks in any solder connections.
One other issue. Didn't someone come up with a water craft part number that
is the same but a fraction of the price?

Subject: Pulsar-List: Bad Rotax 582 Stator Coil Removed
Pulsar People,
I am making progress with my Rotax 582 ignition problem. I just got the
stator coil removed and fortunately the open 6 inches before the firewall, I
did not need to remove or slide the engine from its mounts.
I found one of the white (ground) magneto charging wires was broken right at
the 2 prong rubber connector (shouldn't have had to remove the coil to
discover that). But both green wires of this magneto charging source are
open and as I am told they should read 230 ohms to ground. I wiggled wires
to see if there was a loose connection or intermittent, but they always
showed open. The wires and physical condition of the stator coil look
perfectly fine, no scuffing, cracks, just looks solid.
I anticipate ordering a replacement coil ($713, Ouch! one seventh the cost
of a whole new engine). But, it scares me a bit that both mag charging
coils are bad. In a way not a surprise, because during my most recent
trouble shooting, I could not get spark from either ignition circuit.
Earlier, there was a time, when one ignition circuit was working, where I
found that the engine would not run on "L" mag switch, swapped mags, still
would not runt on "L" mag switch, so both mags seem okay. But now I am
wondering, can a mag have a fault condition that burns up a stator coil? I
doubt it, but it could be costly to replace the stator coil and fry it.
>From the looks of the 4 mag charging coils, they must have a significantly
thinner wire, and allot more turns (230 ohms worth) than the
regulator/battery charging coils, so they would be more susceptible to
failure.
The Quicksilver owner that I got the stator flywheel puller from, said he
went through the same problem and replaced a stator coil on his Rotax 503.
I plan on calling LEAF and talking to a tech, but any other thoughts from
the Pulsar group out there is much appreciated.
Gotta get this Pulsar safely flying for the Pulsar convention.
Best regards,
Ronko

No knowledge on the 582 but on the 912 there was a problem
where both mags failed at the same time. The two wires
that are in a metal sheath shorted out inside the sheath.
That shorted the two wires together.

Thanks for your commentary on your Oshkosh trip this year. A positive benefit of
the sequester was that those of us who were attending seminars and workshops
could actually hear the presenters without multiple pauses caused by the heavy
military iron roaring overhead.
Be well.

New blue head 582 is nested in the cowl.
Now I am working on reworking the cooling circuit, install IVO IFA , r

There are lots of other details that will need attention so I will be a

I am driven by the memory of delicate touch downs at remote air field

Subject: Pulsar-List: 582 blue head upgrade question
Hello all 582 Pulsar flyers
Is anyone experienced replacing the original gray head 582 with the 99 m
od blue head ?
I am returning my Pulsar 582 to flight status and have a new in box blu
ehead.
The new coolant plumbing looks taller and may foul the top cowling.
The missing info includes
1- will the blue head 582 fit under the cowling ?
2- what brand and model radiators to used on the 582 Pulsar?
3- any experience with HAC carburetor upgrade
4- comments on the IVO inflight adjustable
Any help is appreciated................Clark

No they are not the same as lord mounts. These are for
the bed mount Pulsars. I think the Lord mounts started
with the Series II.
I did not stop to think that there was a change in the
engine mounting.

Hi Clark, just put a new blue head in my Pulsar. The top coolant return hos

Subject: | Re: 582 blue head upgrade question |
Thanks for the input George.
I will do as you suggest.
It looks like I have a few other items to tend to.
Can you help with any of these items ?
1- will have to shift the rotary valve oil reservoir aft .
I have a longer hose set and will make an extension off the igniti
on mount plate
2- my radiators and cooling line are long lost.
I just ordered 2 heater cores ( radiators) for an 82 Ford ( I wis
h I knew the exact part Mark Brown used ).
They will need new fitting attached.
I could use some detail pictures of radiator fittings and ..... t
he coolant fill tube with radiator cap.
3- I plan to fit the IVO 3 blade IFA I purchased years back. ( The P
erry is damaged beyond repair)
The rebuilt B box has the 2.6 gear set. It will be nice to avoid t
he RPM drop on the TO roll.
Do you have and comments.
4- The Bing carbs currently have the threaded needles with mixture adj
ust knobs in the cockpit.
Pretty effective but lots of fiddling in flight. I have a early H
AC carb retrofit kit . I am pondering weather to
a- install the HAC alone
b- in combination with the threaded needles set up
5- My Pulsar last flew 6 years back. It used premix Amsoil ( 100 to
1) with avgas.
I remember that ring remained free and I replaced plugs every 50 h
rs as a precaution .
How does that sound to you ?
BTW: is the engine any smoother with the - HYDRO damper that Rotax ins
talled on the Bluehead ?
Thanks for any help ...............Clark - soon to fly - Foste

Hi Clark, just put a new blue head in my Pulsar. The top coolant return hos
e can be moved to the side by drilling a small hole in the aluminum capacit
y charge mount and using a pull tie through the hole, around the coolant ho
se and back. This moves it enough to clear the cowling.

Hi Ray
Yes yes
Pulsar is in my garage
New blue head 582 is nested in the cowl.
Now I am working on reworking the cooling circuit, install IVO IFA , r
enew the battery, repair hanger rash update ELT , rebuild carbs and fu

There are lots of other details that will need attention so I will be a

I am driven by the memory of delicate touch downs at remote air field

Hello all 582 Pulsar flyers
Is anyone experienced replacing the original gray head 582 with the 99 m

I am returning my Pulsar 582 to flight status and have a new in box blu

The new coolant plumbing looks taller and may foul the top cowling.
The missing info includes
1- will the blue head 582 fit under the cowling ?
2- what brand and model radiators to used on the 582 Pulsar?
3- any experience with HAC carburetor upgrade
4- comments on the IVO inflight adjustable
Any help is appreciated................Clark

No they are not the same as lord mounts. These are for
the bed mount Pulsars. I think the Lord mounts started
with the Series II.
I did not stop to think that there was a change in the
engine mounting.
