Doug,=0A=C2-=0AForgive me for not having heard, ignition systems fail on
shutdown.=C2- I find that very hard to believe, understanding how they wo
rk and how we shut=C2-our ignition=C2-down for mag checks.=0A=C2-=0AI
n our CDI ignition system the stator coil charges up a capacitor, then a se
cond coil triggers an SCR (solid state device; silicon controlled rectifier
) and discharges the capacitor into=C2-the ignition coil which has a step
up winding that fires the spark plug.=C2- All we do to shut this down is
ground the very front end of the process, by grounding the stator coil so
no charge is provided to the module that houses the capacitor.=C2- Lycomi
ngs, Continental engines do the same except, they use the magnetic field=C2
-of mag coil, open a set of grounding points,=C2-which produces a=C2-
sudden magnetic field change, which then causes current to flow in the prim
ary coil,=C2-and the secondary coil step up winding fires the spark plug.
=C2- They also, at the front end,=C2-ground the primary coil using the
P-lead to disable ignition.=C2- The only thing that is getting beat up du
ring a mag check is the mag switch.=0A=C2-=0AOur ignition systems are not
very susceptible to spikes or noise, because they are the worst source, th
e culprit of the greatest transients and noise in our aircraft.=0A=0AWith t
he faults that I have found at the connectors coupling the wires from stato
r coil to the CDI module, the most likely root cause is vibration mechanica
lly breaking the wire at the connector.=C2- I have one more side of the s
tator coil to find out where it broke down.=C2- I am very anxoius to find
this other fault and protentially be able to fix it and have a back up sta

mittent connections, right at the rubber 2 conductor connector of my defect
ive stator coil.=C2- I am on a mission to find out where the other side c
harging coil is open.=C2- It would be nice to discover that it also has a
simple connector wire problem and not an open within one of the 2 coils th
at make up the charging circuit.=0A=0AEven after taking extra care to clean
all of the contacts (grounds, power ...) putting everything back together
with the new stator coil, my analog tach is reading way high.=C2- Fortuna
tely my digital tach is what I reference.=C2- Last time I fixed it, I add
ed a stainless steel external tooth lock washer on the heavy ground to dig
into the metal surfaces and provide a good connection to the engine block (
but I cleaned this terminal again and still have the lock-washer in place.

The instructor of the Rotax courses at Lockwood says that if the engine was
running properly at shutdown and it won't start up, it will never be due to
ignition failure.
