I was going to try coolant control too but worried about the slug of cold w
ater in the isolated radiator suddenly cooling the motor. Thought it was b
etter to bottle up the heat in the whole system.

Hello 582 operators
It may be is easier to shut of the coolant line instead of the air flowin
g thru the radiator.
I installed a valve in one of the 5/8 coolant lines between the radiators
. It is operated via push/pull cable.
Works great as I can ramp down the coolant flow to the rt radiator. The cab
in heater works great as it routes the heated air from the still operating
left radiator.
Real simple to install too.........Clark

George, sorry for the delay in replying. I had to take some photos of the
ouvers -see pictures on the Picasa link at the bottom of this message. The
guy
ho built the plane and fitted the louvers operated them by a bicycle type
owden tension cable that puuled them open against an automatic return sprin
g.
t worked well but he used a rotating knob on a screw-thread to pull the cab
le
nd this took minutes to wind all the way in. A 4 stage lever (like the orig
inal
ulsar flap lever but much smaller would have been better.
I replaced the cable with a small geared electric motor driving a worn and
orm-wheel and micro switched to limit the travel and give feedback when ful
ly
pen and shut. It takes about 10 seconds to move from open to shut and works
ell. But is a bit OTT unless you want to operate the louvers automatically
from
water temperature sensor (in my "to do" list).
The port radiator does not have adjustable flaps but is sometimes masked
ccording to ambient temperature - fully masked below freezing, fully unmask
ed
bove 28 degs C and part masked anywhere in between.
Although they work well the louvers would be difficult to make. A simpler
rrangement would be to make a "roller door" type blind operating sideways
and
ith the slats constructed from aluminium piano hinges. This is also in my "
to
o" list for the port radiator.
I've also included a few general pictures of the engine showing the expansi
on
ottle and the oil injection tank.
Let me know if you need any more info, the link to photos (you might need t
o
aste it into your browser) is:
