Subject: | Fretted Crankcase |
I finally got the crankcase split this past weekend and confirmed that it was indeed crankcase fretting. Here are the pictures: http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/bgnorma/library/
This only after 468 hours. I ordered the new parts from Lockwood and they were
kind enough to give me a good faith discount but the parts were still over $4200.
They are going to try to get some relief from Rotax but I doubt they will
do anything from all that I have heard.
Everything else appeared to be in good order. The bearings where fine and the crank
measures fine. It could probably use a little polishing but that's it. Overall,
it's a very simple engine inside. Nothing too complicated.
The new crankcase uses different fasteners and is designed a bit different. There
are some bolts that are torqued and then stretched x amount of degrees. They
also use a thread sleeve to clamp the crankcase together instead of relying
on the long studs that go through the jug and the head to also clamp the case.
Waiting on the parts to arrive.

Barry,
This should logically be covered by a Rotax warranty. This is
obviously a manufacturing defect, or rather a "design" defect.
If they do not want to honor any repair warranty on this, AT
LEAST they should supply replacement parts at a nominal very low
cost.
It's incredible how much that company despises its customers.
It's the perfect example of a large company run by lawyers and
having the monopoly of their market.
Damn I wish that some Japanese company would decide to make a
competitive engine, at half the price. That would end this
undeserved domination.

Guy, I agree whole heartily. They should be a lot more responsive but we'll see
what they do. For now I'm learning a lot about their product and glad it never
stopped during flight. I feel very blessed to be on the ground fixing it and
not in the ground.
