My Pulsar has always been more or less a toy (an expensive one) to take fun
trips or just to punch a hole in the sky but recently it has become a tool
for me. I have joined the ranks along with several of you who use your plane
to commute for work on a regular basis.
I recently took a position in Clovis, NM which is not somewhere Rhonda
really wants to live, not so much the area as the distance from kids and
grandkids. Our plan is she will stay with our home, her jobs and all the
family in the Houston area and I'll secure housing in Clovis, making the
trip home every couple of weeks. The flight can be made non-stop in my plane
with an average flight time of just under 4 hours. I say average because
flying northwest has always been low to avoid the worst of the headwinds but
even then, I routinely see 10 - 30 mph on the nose. The opposite is true on
the flight back to Houston with 20 - 35 mph on the tail at altitude, putting
me home in under 3.5 hours.
Weather can play havoc as it did this week, forcing me to drive the 600+
miles, the last 150 on icy roads.
Hangar space has a 1 to 2 year wait list in Clovis but costs less than 1/3
what I've been paying in Houston. So far, I've been lucky enough to connect
with people who had an empty hangar. My plane does not like being tied down
outside!
