Subject: Nose gear and wing tanks
Good morning friends. Hope all is going well for you. I just wanted to pass along some information on fuel leaks. The 912 Pulsar I purchased developed a fuel leak in the tank end plate. After removing the end plate, I discovered the aluminum angle that is attached to the spar was loose. This could have been the cause of the leak. I made a fiberglass angle to replace the aluminum and glassed it to the spar, using lots of flox in the corners. All of this was covered with PRC and then the end plate attached with PRC. I will let you know how this works out. I have purchased PRC from Wicks in the past, but the prices have escalated. A pint kit is now $100, and most of that gets thrown away due to short shelf life. Bob Hartunian pointed me to Aircraft Spruce that has a 2oz. kit for $20 delivered, and it comes with it's own mixer and applicator. After sealing the tank I still had plenty of PRC left over. While I was working in the hanger, one of my airport neighbors went for a flight in his Velocity. I heard him land but he did not taxi back to the hanger. He was sitting out on the runway with a broken nose gear. The Velocity has a free castor nose gear, like out Pulsars. Instead of controlling the castor by tightening the fork nut, he had ordered the optional dampener from the factory. It failed on landing, the nose gear immediately shimmied and destroyed the fork. Luckily, the nose strut did not collapse, so damage was minimal. So, just a reminder, it's a good idea to check the nose gear as part of each preflight. Be safe, Greg
